I have been trying to take an audio out signal from my Panasonic TC-54PS14
plasma TV. I know this thing is old (relatively)but still has good picture quality. I would like to take an audio signal from it to my stereo system for movies and such. The manual that came with it is useless. Didn't even mention or show the optical output, and has no information about using it. I have plugged an optical cable from the back of the TV to my DAC, but get no sound. (the optical input on my DAC works fine with my CD player optical out, so it's not a problem with the DAC) The menu on the TV remote
makes no mention of it anywhere. Anybody got an idea about what I need to do to make this work?

It shows it on page 10 of the manual but in a manner which makes me wonder if it is a feature of this set.

I would try switching the TV speakers to "Off" as indicated in the manual when using external speakers. Page 16 of the manual. If that does not work I would post the question to the appropriate area on AVSForum.

Good luck.

Found this on Crutchfield:

Digital Audio Out: The rear-panel optical digital output allows you to send a Dolby Digital bit stream to a Dolby Digital receiver or decoder. If the program doesn't include a Dolby Digital soundtrack, a 2-channel PCM bit stream is output.

Your DAC likely does not support Dolby so you need to change the sources to output 2 channel audio to the TV so it can send 2 channel audio through the optical output to the DAC.

Thanks Doublej! I really appreciate you taking the time to research this. You have given me an idea. On Amazon I have found some inexpensive (around $30) optical to RCA DACs that claim to support Dolby. I'm gonna try one of them. Ultimate audio quality for the TV is not as important to me as just being able to use speakers other than what are in the TV. I will report back on whether it works. I can't be the only person still using an older TV without all the bells and whistles.

Just a follow up. I bought a "Prozor model PST159 DAC" off of Amazon for about $30 and now I have sound from the TV through my stereo. Thanks for the info that solved my problem!

I understand you've solved your problem, but I'll add this (for future search reference).

On my old Panasonic TV, to use the digital optical audio out into a two-channel DAC, I had to set the TV to two-channel output in the settings menu. But even then, the optical out only works for digital inputs (like HDMI).
