Question re DVI connection

TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Home Theater systems and more.

Is DVI better than component cable for hook up? I have my progressive scan DVD player and my High Definition cable box connected to the SONY RPTV using high quality compnent cbles. The audio is connected directly to the processor via optical cables.
What would I gain by switching to a DVI hookup for the video (both tha cable box and the DVD player have a DVI out and the TV has DVI in)? I have been told that there would be no improvement but I see many here that use DVI.
