If you're making use of the PAL or PAL-to-NTSC-conversion capabilities of the Oppo, you're not likely to find any other upconverting DVD player that does as capable of a job.

If you're only using NTSC Region 1 discs, take a look at the Toshiba HD-A2. Yes, it's HD DVD, but it's only $299 (list), and as 4season said, you don't have to use the HD DVD capability if you don't want. It's an excellent upconverting DVD player.
