When using HDMI, must the audio go through the HDMI cable?

I'm looking to buy an Oppo 970HD. I have an HDMI compatible HDTV but my receiver does not have HDMI input. I don't want to run the audio through the tv, so I'm wondering if I can set the player to send video through HDMI (to the tv) and sound via optical/coaxial/analog to the receiver.

Anyone know the answer? Thanks in advance...
