RE: When using HDMI, must the audio go through the HDMI cable?

I don't have an Oppo but I'll take a stab at the answer.

You can hook the HDMI to the TV and the TV will pick up the sound as well as the video. You should also be able to run a digital connection from the Oppo to the receiver to feed digital audio to it.

You will need to mute the TV's sound or simply turn it all the way down or you will get sound from both the TV and the receiver. That doesn't sound good in my experience, having done it in the early days before I got a HDMI switching receiver.

Check whether you can specify different audio options for the HDMI and the digital out audio. You may be able to send 2 channel audio to the TV and full surround to the receiver. If so, do that and you will be able to watch DVDs using only the TV and the DVD at any stage if you choose to do so, as an alternative to firing up the receiver as well and going for surround sound.
