I understand your frustration, but your condemnation is a bit harsh

Blu Ray and HD DVD technologies are still in the beginning stages of their life cycles, and even the latest players are only 2nd generation. Standard technology/product life cycle curve dictates that the technology and products are not yet stable. If the offerings are successful, they will eventually reach a plateau of stability.

At this point, buying into either of these technologies brands you as an Early Adopter. If you choose to be an Early Adopter, you will deal with incompatibilities, reliability issues, limited availability, higher prices, rapid churn in features/functions, and rapid obsolescence of products as new versions come out. If you're not comfortable dealing with these frustrations, being an Early Adopter is not for you.
