could it be the player?

I have zero experience with DVD HD or Blu-Ray, either one, but the trouble you're having sounds like something that used to happen to me a lot before I switched to my current DVD player. If my experience is any indicator, it turns out that the player has a lot more to do with tracking and error-handling than the disc.
