It might come down to the format that has the most films you like.

For me, the choice was easy: Blu-ray has more films that I want to see in hi-def and so I went with a BD player. BD also has more discs with uncompressed PCM audio tracks, if audio quality is important to you. The Sony player that you saw in the demo was very likely the BDP-S300, which currently lists for $499 (a near-identical model, the S301, sells at Costco for slightly less) but I've heard that the price will come down to $399 pretty soon.
