This is probably THE best food movie ever made. It tells the story of a French expatriate chef who, after working for 17 years as a servant/compnion for two nineteenth century coastal Danish spinster sisters, decides to repay them with a sumptuous meal purchased with recent lottery winnings. The three live in an an aging and ever dwindling fundementalist community and Babette invites everyone, imcluding an old soldier visiting nearby who once courted one of the sisters. The meal and its preparation take up most of the narrative and is of course of to die for quality. Highly recommended but don't watch this if you're hungry.

In college at a local theater, they would show this movie, and then at a nearby restaurant, they would recreate the meal. They had to use "mock turtle soup" however, but it was quite a treat. In this case, one could watch it if one were hungry! In my humble opinion, this is the classic food movie.
My first post here.
Another classic is the japanese movie "Tampopo"
Of the many many wonderful scenes in this classic, my favorite is the one in the French restaurant where the young man takes over the
ordering off the menu while his boss is kicking him under the table.

In strict Japanese business society one is expected to order only and exactly what the leader orders. All the others present followed the rule but the young man in question was *totally oblivious*, not to mention too downright eager for a Japanese -- that was the joke.
Gee, thanks for explaining it. I totally missed it and am glad to have you there to guide me.

But what's up with the sarcasm?
Do you seriously think it's my favorite scene because of the cheap slapstick?

Wrong word choice, sorry.

"First, enjoy the Gestalt of the noodles."

...bout 'classic food movie'.
It's like saying Bagdad Café was about 'motels'.
I think it's more a classic 'giving' film.

...of best food movie would have to be: "Eat, drink, man, woman"
I don't know if it is really THE best, but it is one of good food films for sure.
