I recently rewatched the current DVDs of "Journey to the Center of
the Earth" and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". Both star James Mason, the former with Pat Boone and Arelene Dahl and the latter with Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre. Both have been maeticulously restored (particularly "Journey...") and both feature anamorphic video and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound (which the menu in "Journey..." mistakenly calls "Dolby Surround"). Both are enjoyable, family friendly efforts, with a mixture of adventure, humor, music, and thrills. "...Leagues..." has more extras but the various video versions of "...Journey..." shown in split screen is very well done. I cannot imagine either of these without Mason, who is superb in each one.I also have the silent 1917 version of "...Leagues...", which is a hoot and features some of the earliest underwater cinematography ever done.

Follow Ups:
but he had something that has disappeared: class. Jeremy Irons is the only actor who embodies that characteristic who springs to mind.

He was absolutely superb in one of his later films.....The Verdict. I think he outclassed Newman in that one.

Toward the end Gertrude the duck is eaten (off screen) by the Sarknesen decsendent. Her owner ties to kill him and is held back by the others. But in a glorious deux ex machina, the villain falls into an avalanch and perishes. And of course the avalanch opens up the shaft for their escape.

You do not think of Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre as "Disney" actors, but are very good in "Leagues."

And you don't think of David Lynch and Disney in the same thought either but remember "The Straight Story".

That was a very good film. I always wondered if Farnsworth, who prided himself on having never uttered a swear word in his film career, ever saw a Lynch film. A true gem, and one of the few G rated non cartoons.

He was very ill at the time of filming and I think it added to his performance rather than detract from it. I love to introduce folks to this one.True to form, director Lynch forbade chapter encoding on the DVD, the only one I've seen without chapters.

I think that the 20,000 is far superior than Journey!

And I feel just the opposite. (Although I love them both.)
