Terrific film, I thought. All around well done. I could relate, and that's important to me.
What's your opinion?

Follow Ups:
Because of this thread I dug it out and saw it for the second time. I agree with all the positive posts here. This is very well done and superbly written, photographed, and acted.

...you put into words what I wasn't capable of doing.
Good one.

Saw in the theatre. Strong stuff, in every sense. Almost too bleak for me...but fascinating. Without going into detail...it didn't quite gel for me, but I don't hold that against it. This isn't a film you watch for " light entertainment".Due to being thrilled by the same duo's Amorres Peros, I had unreadonably high expecations for 21 Grams, which undoubtedly accounts for my preferring the former. However, 21 was much adored by smarter people than I.

I was unable to tolerate it and shut it down after about 20 minutes. It's not like it wasn't the right time to see it or anything because I was really keen to see it (on The Movie Network) and was even able to approach it relatively cold and with an open mind. I thought it was as mind-numbingly awful as Wonderland, which I was able to stay with for a few minutes longer. I thought it was hilarious that my cat chose that time to get rid of a hairball of about the same weight.

It has been discussed more than one time here. I fully agree with you. Bad. Over cooked. Over done.
Empty.
Shallow.

...Sean Penn's great.
Try Buffalo 66 also by Vincent Gallo, if you like 21 grams.

I thought it had good moments and was by far not the worst film out there. The family story was overdone, I thought, but both young actors - Gallo and Christina Ricci played quite well, plus Anjelica Huston was great too. Not a strong story, but passable.

Interesting, a lot of people hate Gallo's narcisism but I think he's just being honest. Like Narcisse!
I want to catch his last, The Brown Bunny' which came out but didn't show in my town, only Paris.
Got booed at Cannes by a lot of horny Italian journalists, I hear ;0)

I think Friday Night is incredible, and Beau Travail simply one of the best films ever... IMO.

...I'm never set-minded and will look out for them and let you know what I think, ok?

But if you haven't seen the Trouble, don't bother, it is trash.Or I did not understand it... whichever came first!

How can someone make the best ever film & then do something you can't even watch?????
I know this happens, but what's the mechanism?
What other directors have done that?
I know, Gus Van Sant...
I really liked a few of his films but the last one, with Matt Damon about two guys lost in the desert, I walked out on.
NOTHING HAPPENED apart from them saying, 'let's go west' or 'you go over there and I'll go over here'
Shit!!

I thought it was terribly over rated. Naiomi Watts was great, as always. Benecio was pretty good but Penn was awful. Sean seems to play the same character over and over. Generally I thought the characters were all under developed, and as a result I didn't give a shit about what happened to them. The premise of the movie was clever and I did not have any issue with the darkness of the themes. But the non-linear way that it was assembled felt more like a desperate move on the part of the director (to make up for a lack of solid content,) than an enhancement.

...and hereīs why I think so (and the whole thread following the link is interesting, too)Regards

What a polarity of opinions!
I didn't think it was poorly developed at all; I also thought Penn did surprisingly good in his role. Casting him in a mostly sedate, but charged character was an usual directorial choice, but I was pleased with his performance. Watts's character as a cocaine junkie hit it right on the head, I thought. I have a dear friend whose wife turned out to be a coke fiend, and Watts nailed that behavior 100%.
Del Toro is going to be one of the biggest actors of our generation if he continues to develop in the direction he's headed now.
I would probably say good, not great, or even very good. Watts is a very good actress, and given her roles, I must assume that she chooses her films very carefully. Penn is one of his generations best, as is Del Toro. I liked the non-chronological method of developing the story. It really grew on me. I did not think the plot was particularly strong, but really was a vehicle for three very good actors to revolve around the film's arc. Recommended.

I didn't care enough about the characters - people so deeply stuck in their self destruciveness - to really get into the film.It was just soooo negative and, I felt, tried too hard to be gritty in an arty way. Gritty in a gritty way may have worked better for me.
"Where are we going? And what am I doing in this hand basket?"
