I think films, when they are first released, have much more power to 'surprise' us.
Afterwards, there's the ballast of all criticism hanging on them.
I haven't seen Wings of Desire since it came out.
I loved it then.

Run Lola Run was just as interesting to me when I recently re-saw it because the love story was just as poignant. Heck, I was still awed by the directorial style and cinematography/fx.
