One online review said it was the Most Amazing film visually.
Without the Giant Bugs, I don't know...
Follow Ups:
I thought Rex Reed's review was pretty reasonable.

...if you failed to see it in IMAX 3D. Dang ! I should have been paying attention to the reviews but I wanted to avoid spoilers.
I am tempted to see it again on the IMAX this time.

I thought there were more IMAX's than the one at Webb Chapel. I agree LBJ was well-congested enough already without adding in all the construction work.
And was it really in IMax? You said "wannabe."
...was a 1 wk engagement repl by "Cap'n Crunch". Considering that Gravity was top box office again this week, I'll bet somebody wishes they hadn't done that just yet . OTOH, popular IMAX features sometimes do return engagements as the last show of the day.

"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
...I've read a couple of reviews that explain the ending of the film.
It seems that Bullock is not really living since her daughter died and then she nearly committed suicide in the capsule.
She decides to live and rallies to save herself.
At the end when she sheds her spacesuit under water, she is reborn.
Next you see her exiting the water on her hands and knees in the mud, representing primordial ooze, then she stands tall on her feet.
Maybe less symbolic than "2001", but interesting nonetheless.
Overall, it's excellent--5 stars. Bullock is excellent, and Clooney is very good in a lighter (...ahem...) role.
It's an superb story of human survival in space, recorded spectaculary. 3D added depth to some scenes, a few dramatically, but it looks VERY good in 2D.
I'll see it again.
Too bad it wasn't recorded in 2.35 AR.

...by scientist Neil DeGrasse Tyson:
Why doesn't Bullock's hair float weightlessly when she does?
Why is an MD on a Hubble repair mission?
1. Hair gel
2. Not just an MD per se but apparently a medical engineer type who has developed an optical device first used in human medicine and now being installed on Hubble (per conversation in first scene).
Howcome the Hubble, International Space Station and a Chinese space station are in sight lines of one another?
How come when Clooney releases Bullock's tether, he drifts away. In zero-G a single tug brings them together.
Most all satellites orbit east to west. In the film the satellite debris came from west to east.
1. Chinese station was not within site of Hubble, 100 miles from ISS. They must be within jetting distance because if they're not, no happy ending.
2. Got me, don't remember the details of this one.
3. I actually thought debris was traveling east to west.
It' s been a week since I saw it y'know.
Since it is all relative up there.. the 'wrongway' debris would simply have to be going slower than the otheer group to seem to come from the wrong way.
I am AMAZED the physics guy dropped the ball on that.
What Elizabeth said. :-)
Also, "up and down" as we think of it planetside doesn't apply for this sequence - or in fact for much of the movie. It's shot and edited to be disorienting in certain scenes.

...Did you gain any new "insights" from a 2nd viewing. Or just a guilty pleasure?

...on the biggest screen you can find.
It is absolutely amazing - you will become totally lost in the visuals and the story - they are so enveloping and awe-inspiring.
Never a dull moment as Bullock and Clooney go from one crisis to the next.
Bullock should be nominated for an Oscar (but I still think Blanchette will win).
See it in 3-D while you still can!
Definitely one of the best films I've seen in a while.
I found a good portion it to be unbelievable but can forgive that because the effects were very well done.
(older) fanboy alert! Sandra Bullock in shorts floating in space!
I have no desire to see it twice and it does not compare to 2001 A Space Odyssey like one reviewer said (not even close) but as an adventure it was fun.
You're right. '2001' was 2/3 of a fine space story and 1/3 of a mind-numbingly-boring light show and that was ultimately VERY disappointing.
'Gravity' is a story of human survival set in space that is populated by a couple almost-real people.
'2010' was a much-better story and movie than '2001'...
...all IMO, of course.

...I heard Jon Stewart say the special effects did not compare.
or something like that
Whoa, remember Jesse James has been there, done that.
she still weren't bad ;)
or are they filmed with the big IMAX cameras? Its hard to imagine two cameras running at once (actually four or more because each 3D uses two cameras).
If the original format is lower quality than original IMAX, then I would think not. But the last time that I went to a public theater (rather than my home theater) to see something, it was Avatar in IMAX digital 3D or something like that. There was a non-IMAX choice, but having seen what IMAX and Showscan did years ago, I chose IMAX. Then I did research and found out that people are still using the IMAX terminology for some lower-quality stuff, just to sell the name, I think. So, you need to be clear on what you mean by IMAX, since IMAX company is not clear:
Here is a quote from Wikipedia:
"Another disadvantage is the much lower resolution of digital IMAX compared to traditional IMAX film, which is estimated to be up to 12,000 × 8,700 pixels with at least 6,120 × 4,500 minimum discernible pixels (27 megapixels).[20] Some reviewers also note that many non-IMAX theaters are already projecting films at 4K resolution, while digital IMAX has deployed both 2K and 4K products.
Despite these concerns, IMAX has consistently chosen to hold to a uniform marketing position of "The IMAX Experience" regardless of the various underlying technologies and screen sizes.[2"
...I've read says it's one of the best of the years.
One said to be sure to see it in 3-D and forget about seeing on your TV.
Going on Sunday.

I went in fearing boredom but there were a few twists and changes of pace. I think the visual impact will depend entirely on the theater you visit. The picture I saw was just a bit dim which I think hid a lot of detail. As for Clooney, cute acting, and Bullock lost mom in space. Most people will like this.
I'm not used to seeing Sci Fi without Aliens!

Wait, what was I talking about??
It might be worth another try, from what I've read.
"UP" was really nice in 3D, for depth of image, not just pop-out at you stuff.
I have wear them over glasses, and it does take me 10-15 minutes for my eyes to get with it.
I've only seen one IMax, in 2D, Ghost Protocol, and I would guess that this film, in IMax 3D would be (--------) ( you fill in the blank). Overwhelming, I hope!
.
...unless my eyeglass frames are much larger than yours. I just plop the 3dfirst glasses over the top of my specs and I'm good to go.
Along with Coraline, Hugo and Life of Pi, Gravity is designed by a master visual storyteller to be seen in 3D. It is truly is in its original, intended form only in that format.
BTW, the image in my 3d presentation was bright, sharp and crystal clear, with a remarkable depth.

Saw it in 2d, 3d, and 3d Imax, bought the BRD and have watched it maybe 3 times as well. I realize it ain't Goodfellas, or even Casino, but it's one Helluva popcorn flick.

I know what you mean, but Bullock got raves in the review I saw, said Cloony was Cloony. Isn't he too old to an Astronaut??
Anyway, barring really bad reviews, esp locally, I want to see it in IMAX. It should be something(!), but I'm bringing ear plugs. Don't leave home without them...
...I'll be seeing the IMAX version tomorrow. I hear ya' (ha ha) regarding the ear plugs for IMAX presentations. Joe Morgenstern of WSJ mentioned this in his utterly positive review. His advice was to resist the temptation and not use them because while there are loud portions, overall the sound design was "essential to the experience". Don't know if Morgenstern's review was based on the IMAX version although he tends towards this when there's a choice.
Can't wait !!!

the reviewer would have. I read the first and last paragraphs, to say it was a rave would be an understatement. Personally, I'm waiting on Willy Bonka's review. He's usually the first here to catch a new release.
