As a transport and player I found it not to be deficient on any level. The S503 uses and implements a higher than standard clock. What sounds like "deficient bass" could be better defined/refined bass. I had that experience years ago when we upgraded a transport with a Super Clock2.
As usual every system is different with many variables. I belong to a very casual wine and booze tasting club. We meet every couple of months and the opinions abound. Usually though we agree on the quality of of said beverage, but personal tastes? Fugetaboutit!
The only drawback to the Sparkler might be the return policy something you need to look into. I was fortunate enough to listen to one at Charney Audio before purchase. My gear and speakers are what Charney uses so it was a no brainer.
Hope this helps and you find what your looking for.
Chris
