When I saw the second trailer and it revealed Halle Berry, I winced mightily. I thought what a great way to ruin a potentially good action movie. Fortunately, Dame Berry wasn't in the film that long. This film slashes a lot of records: absolutely the most glass broken, the most knives throw, the most punches thrown/landed, widest variety of fire-power, and an inexhaustible graphic novel assassin: John Wick.
Fans know that John has been declared "excommunicado" by the High Table for killing a fellow killer in Ian McShane's safe harbor, The Continental Hotel. We open with Wick having about T-30 as he seeks out any form of help before all hell breaks loose. And it does. That's what a $14M bounty will do.
Acting not important, dialog trivial, but action is amazing and more plentiful than Wick 2. But, I still like Wick 2 for the art direction and locations which were fluffed over in Wick 3.
No spoiler, but John makes it and reunites with his new doggy. Will there be another? You will have to see it yourself.
wonks: 3.5 out of 5 for being best at what it is, action and death above all
wanks: 1.5 out of 5 for a few back pedals (like Berry and others), less location color, and unnecessary double-taps to the head

I am the curious type, and get a senior discount, so I went to see it, in perhaps the best public theatre in Los angeles, the old fox westwood, built in 1938 , but updated to be sportin signs saying it is certified ultimate dolby. I don't favor multiplexes, so go out of my way to support this big space. It didn't disappoint. Some spoilers follow....
As for the movie, it was ridiculous , but generated some laughs because of it, along with some nervous laughter from me because of the extreme violence pictured as a possible reality.
It is a pretty film, they do a lot of fancy lighting , probably to keep it interesting and new as the groups of attackers bring knives to a gun fight, one at a time.
The visual interest is always high, a group of high speed motorcycle assassins pull japanese swords in unison, pose, then attack. With disastrous results, of course.
The bad guys all have a pretty ominous look , but in spite of the best equipment , obviously didn't spend a lot of time at the target range. They couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat. They also might have missed ninja school on victory day. After a while , it reminded me of the old cowboy movies with six shooters that never ran out of bullets.
Yet, the movie still pulls out a victory. State of the art hollywood big budget movie making hammers crap into gold. I would suggest only seeing this only in the biggest , most technically advanced movie house you can find. Otherwise it will probably disappoint. You can't run the indy 500 in a bathroom.
THe sound track really is impressive, once the end credits rolled, I could listen to it, and the big modern sound system ,a dolby ultimate theatre system in a big space, really got an impressive work out. It seemed there were no limitations on what the system could do.
of course, the big space helped the effects, the theatre might have 1200 seats. It is sometimes rented out for red carpet premieres, it has a balcony and red velvet curtains that raise for the presentation and lower at the finish. A first run house, yet not in the absolute best financial shape, one of the reasons I go , to support a big old house. THe famous chinese theatre in hollywood, although still worthwhile, got chopped into a multiplex, for the money. Tough for a single feature house to cut it today.

Your assessment of Wick 3 pretty much matches mine. It was nearly continuous choreographed violence juxtaposed with totally bizarre and incongruous settings but in a really entertaining manner. I found myself laughing frequently at the outrageousness of the whole spectacle. There's nothing high minded about this production and it doesn't take itself seriously.
I saw this in a new Dolby auditorium and was really impressed with the sound and visuals. Gunfire had a sharp percussive impact similar to the real thing and the tons of breaking glass had a satisfying shimmer to it. This is Hollywood in technical top form. A guilty pleasure if ever there was one. I'll be seeing this again before it leaves the Dolby theater just for the sensory stimulation.
Yep, I was correct in my assessment. This is the "feel good" movie of the year! For us fans, this chapter revealed more insight to the organization that operates the Continental Hotel. We also learn a little more about JW 's formative years.
Chapter 4 or John Wick4 slated for 2021. I am stoked. Again.
The sequel where he gets back in good graces will be the best. Big assumptions there. Or better yet, he finds another love interest to cool him down.
Popcorn class film. Saw a recent interview with Reeves. He has no illusions of it being anything more than a decent action film series.

his physical trainer(s) a % of his take to keep it (him) going for as long as possible.
Certainly the cash flow is there.

The trainers all got screen credits, even the dog trainers, but not the dogs..
I think reeves fitness trainer was listed first pretty far up in the credits , and I only caught one credit for reeves trainer. the credits go by kind of fast for me to get all the second line info.
As for the money, no worries, it is a prosperous industry, they know it might be a long time between paychecks, and there is no substitute for talent when times get hard and help is needed.
Some guys are always quick to knock the guy's work, I guess it comes with the paycheck. i think he serves the work well. The bank robber movie against the surfers, the excellent adventure movie, the matrix , all turned out very well. He might not be perfect, but has improved in time. I have no problem with the guy,but guess he will always be a punching bag .
With his interest in motorcycles, I wasn't surprised to see a major action sequence in this film using motorcycles. The guy has a vanity high dollar motorcycle company, as you might know. Probably his accountants idea, to be fair. A buddy had to do the same thing, but just to write off parts. That stuff gets expensive, I am told.
Pedal bikes for me, I look forward to an action sequence with multiple samurai assassins on bicycles in his next movie. I hope they ring handlebar bells before they attack.
He is in his 50's now so I imagine his days of heavy action films are limited. He said he does a lot of training and does the choreographed parts but has a long time associate stuntman do the hard parts.

it is based on a graphic novel where the improbable is law and the impossible is the reality.
they are the most law abiding bad guys I have ever heard of, now that you mention it.
Big money maker also
