2021 Oscars - I am getting this in just under the wire. Nomadland is the heavy favorite to win this year and I ranked it last place out of the 8 nominated films. So I'll be way way off this year - but I rarely pick the movie Hollywood picks. So here are my picks. Out of 5.
8) Nomadland ***
7) Mank ***
6) Judas and the Black Messiah ***
5) Promising Young Woman ***½
4) Trial of the Chicago 7 ***½
3) The Father ****
2) Minari ****
1) Sound of Metal ****
I was surprised I liked Sound of Metal - seemed like less hype on this one.
Follow Ups:
I have only seen Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal. I did like Sound of Metal. I thought is was a worthy candidate.

Aren't nominated I'll never know. If Vanessa Kirby doesn't win best actress then the moon really is made of cheese.
hard to resist and most viewers appreciate them more than nuanced performances such as that of Frances McDormand's in, "Nomadland." Not a judgment, just an observation: chewing scenery always wins over thoughtful.
I get that...I liked Nomadland a lot and I love Fraces McDormand. Most of Pieces of a Woman reminds me of Cassavetes' A Woman Under the Influence with Gena Davis. Trust me...I'm not frequently swayed by the overdramatic vs subtle performances. I would vote for Kirby in a Stanislavski minute.

I think White Tiger was released in 2021 so it may have missed the deadline. Perhaps has a chance for next year - although January releases often get forgotten.Shia LaBeouf probably killed The White Woman's chances to get anything. He's radioactive in Hollywood at the moment I believe.

Yes on the Shia observation. Also, the mom paying him off so that he would leave seemed like a script misstep. That didn't deter me, however, from marveling at Kirby's performance.
