It does semm that some people here are confusing my lack of enthusiasm for this movie with a lack of understanding of the movie. I got it. I LIKED it. I didn't think it was one of the best movies ever made. Not even close.

Maybe give "The Bicycle Thief" a few years and try it again? Over a period of 25 years I watched about a dozen Truffaut films once each, but they never really impressed me. I then finally watched one a second time...wow! Now I'm just watching ones I've already seen.

I'll do that. maybe the build up was a problem. I remember that i was pretty put off by A Clockwork Orange the first time I saw it and I now consider it to be one of my all time favorites

Yes, having extremely high expectations can be a serious problem.
The opposite can happen also. We just watched "The Carpetbaggers", and Kazan's "The Arrangement". Both were better than I expected, in very different ways of course.
