At the risk of being pelted with rotton tomatoes I have to say I expected much much more. I liked it. But one of the best movies ever made? Not in my book. Not even in the ball park.
Follow Ups:
Where is the "New Beverly"?

I've watched it 2 times and nothing about it is indelible in my mind. Lots of technical innovations, sure, but a worthwhile narrative? bleah
At least Bicycle Thief has a compelling story and memorable performances which still make one antsy towards the end.

I FELL DOWN IN THE STREET!
Funny you should mention Orson Welles in connection with a work by de Sica...when he saw "Shoeshine" after it was released in the United States, he said, "In handling a camera, I feel I have no peer. But what de Sica can do, I can't do...the camera disappeared, the screen disappeared, it was just life." Welles went on to call "Shoeshine" "the best film I have ever seen."
"I feel I have no peer..."
I can just picture him saying that.

Gregg Toland might've disagreed.
Knowing Welles, he would have been delighted that it ruffled some feathers. That's probably why he said it. (That and the fact that he believed it to be true)

There's no law that you have to like it.
I really love the film. Besides being a very fine film for many technical and artistic reasons (IMO), it makes me realize all the things we take for granted.
In America, if we needed a bicycle all we'd need to do is go to the garage and grab one that's been sitting unused for months, or go borrow the neighbor's for free.

But I did like it.

Sistine Chapel and mutter, "What's the big deal? Paint on a ceiling..."
I would have thought it impossible for a human, parent or not, to view this film without feeling intense emotions but you disprove that hypothesis.
Not enough fx or what?
I can always rely on you to be a dick.
I guess you didn't like the Chapel?
I had mixed feelings about it.Do tell me though is the definition of a gentleman someone who cops a pompous attitude and insults people by implication? Is it my directness that bothers you?
For me one of the greatest ever.
Now one question maybe of relevance: Are you a father?
I hope not being indiscreet, but I think that count for much for this film.
Yes I am.
Well then...
It does semm that some people here are confusing my lack of enthusiasm for this movie with a lack of understanding of the movie. I got it. I LIKED it. I didn't think it was one of the best movies ever made. Not even close.
FWIW, I meant: "there's no law you have to *even* like it".
Maybe give "The Bicycle Thief" a few years and try it again? Over a period of 25 years I watched about a dozen Truffaut films once each, but they never really impressed me. I then finally watched one a second time...wow! Now I'm just watching ones I've already seen.

I'll do that. maybe the build up was a problem. I remember that i was pretty put off by A Clockwork Orange the first time I saw it and I now consider it to be one of my all time favorites
> maybe the build up was a problem.
Yes, having extremely high expectations can be a serious problem.
The opposite can happen also. We just watched "The Carpetbaggers", and Kazan's "The Arrangement". Both were better than I expected, in very different ways of course.

Was it about a song?
no wonder so people emigrated out of Post WW2 Europe and the UK to the USA, Australia and beyond
Now the World seems so much more highly paced and affluent; but is that really such a good thing?

If you do not feel this film in your own flesh, then...

Donīt remember this one, I must have missed it, or is my memory a failing...
