I've watched it 2 times and nothing about it is indelible in my mind. Lots of technical innovations, sure, but a worthwhile narrative? bleah
At least Bicycle Thief has a compelling story and memorable performances which still make one antsy towards the end.

Funny you should mention Orson Welles in connection with a work by de Sica...when he saw "Shoeshine" after it was released in the United States, he said, "In handling a camera, I feel I have no peer. But what de Sica can do, I can't do...the camera disappeared, the screen disappeared, it was just life." Welles went on to call "Shoeshine" "the best film I have ever seen."
"I feel I have no peer..."
I can just picture him saying that.

Gregg Toland might've disagreed.
Knowing Welles, he would have been delighted that it ruffled some feathers. That's probably why he said it. (That and the fact that he believed it to be true)
