I saw it 15 years ago so I was wondering if the Carpenter, Cult film will do to me today.
It did nothing.
Just a small piece of shit, with a few nice ideas, like NY being a big prison, most of the rest is outdate or too laugh at....
Actors made of wood.
A precursor of Blade Runner, which is a reaaly good film.
Follow Ups:
...there's always "Escape from LA".
Another flick directed by Carpenter starring Kurt Russell... A little lighter and more fun (and funny!)
Or there's also the remake of The Thing (from another world). Both Carpenter and Russell's finest hour, if you can handle it!
And if you're gonna' go that far, you may as well check out They Live. Carpenter directs and replaces Russell with "Rowdy" Roddy Piper (an ex-professional wrestler) with interesting results. A subversive cult masterpiece.
Cheers
is a young Kim Cattrall who is way hotter (as I remember, anyway) than during her Sex in the City years.

Well what should I say? I saw it ( Big Trouble ) and...I found me boring to death as much as for ...The thing...
I suppose we have not the same taste, but thank you for trying and this nice post!!!
C´est la vie!
I think you are being too hard here. A low budget film, with, at that time, lower tier actors. Kurt Russell's career was nowhere when this film was made, having spent the previous eight years doing various television episodes. The film's concept was relatively original, which you acknowlege, then complement Blade Runner, which basically took the same ideas, and repackaged them. You dis' Hawkins because Coltrane came along?
Yes you are right a bit too hard, but the worse is really that most of the parts are just laughtable.
...it's an old fashion, fast paced, post apocalypse thriller. It's "over the top," but pretty well made. For me, it made for a fun Saturday afternoon, way back when. The fact that Snake Pliskin lands his glider on the roof of one of the WTC buildings is an unfortunate coincidence, that gets in my head in a distracting way. But, I could watch it again. Now the sequel is another story, truly bad.
You're being too kind. It's probably worse than that :-)
Actually, I've got both on DVD and they're enjoyable on a very occasional basis. The second is really a re-hash of the first with a couple of twists just to avoid doing exactly the same thing twice and I think it's worst aspect is the fact that it is so much of a re-hash in many ways. You can almost say that if you've seen one you've seen them both.
Light, trite, no socially redeeming features, probably low B-grade action films which really aren't anywhere near the quality of the best of Carpenter's work.

You can't say you saw Adrienne Barbeau and "It did nothing" for you.
-Tom §.
I can´t. Because she is no S. Johansson..

Don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining.
You did not missed my soft spot...or was it my hard....
:-)
Don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining.
Just doesn't hold up. I absolutely hate "MASH" for the same reasons.

Some films, like some singles, are very much of their times and don't age particularly well.
But if you liked it at the time, then that is all you can ask of it.
Otherwise we would say that those early films of trains coming at the audience were stupid, but in their day, they really were important and entertaining.
If you doubt me, try a party full of 35-40 year olds and play Duran Duran... and just stand back!
I say yes to everything you say, but please no Dudan Duran!
... A Flock Of Seagulls.
.. Dark City, for a worthy example of this ilk.
Cheers.
Thanks, too late I saw it.
