I wish I'd gone and seen it at Harvard Sq back in Dec last year when it was there..Another great work out for the old melon here.I love a film i need to watch and re-watch after a day or two at least once to organize all the elements. The sense that some world shattering great and unbelievable mystery about the nature of reality is being revealed rivets my attention and there are a few 'devices' employed with great effect while in that state. I don't know about you but i call it a great film. certainly a fascinating watch but my brain chemistry has been permanently altered for years now so i may be in a minority.
Follow Ups:
I'm getting my head prepared for it. Watched Bunuel's "The Milky Way" Sunday, and watched "Mulholland Dr." for the third time yesterday.

Is the whole of MD about the nature of Hollywood?
The good and the bad, black and white hats now as the blond and dark hair of the 2 women. The need to accept/meld both sides of Hollywood as demonstrated by the sex scene between the 2 women.
Well, I think I understand most of it now. The first time I knew I liked it, but didn't understand much. The second time I was able to untangle the difference between the dreams, the current action, and the flachbacks.
This last time I understood many of the details and clues...but still have a ways to go.
In a few years I'll watch it again.
It sounds like you are approching the meaning differently than I am, which is of course OK.

... if the entire film from when she crawls under the shrub (or whatever) to hide was a dream until...
My interpretation is that about 85% of the film is a dream Naomi Watts' character is having, just before she wakes up and shoots herself. The rest is flashbacks, and a few hallucinations. YMMV

...the best review/explanation I've read was written by Jonathan Valin in The Perfect Vision, IIRC, not long after the movie came out on DVD.
