Well, I think I understand most of it now. The first time I knew I liked it, but didn't understand much. The second time I was able to untangle the difference between the dreams, the current action, and the flachbacks.
This last time I understood many of the details and clues...but still have a ways to go.
In a few years I'll watch it again.
It sounds like you are approching the meaning differently than I am, which is of course OK.

My interpretation is that about 85% of the film is a dream Naomi Watts' character is having, just before she wakes up and shoots herself. The rest is flashbacks, and a few hallucinations. YMMV

...the best review/explanation I've read was written by Jonathan Valin in The Perfect Vision, IIRC, not long after the movie came out on DVD.
