Heck, yeah! Wish I had seen it in the theatre. This must be Spielberg's best film, hardly a wrong turn and lacking the ususal Spielbergian (negative) signatures. Well-written too! (Not Spielberg.)
And the kid. Damn! Seemed like a natural, not an actor at all, one of those children a lucky director occasionally finds on the street. So imagine my surprise when I learned at the end who it was -- Christian Bale, fully formed at an early age.
At one point early on, after the kid got into the clutches of the two Americans, I innocently asked my buddy (who had seen it before), "Who's playing the John Malkovich role?"
Oh.

I've often wondered how many times they shot the scene where the house keeper slaps Bales character, then all the emotions he goes thru without
saying a word.
I think Malkovitch was overacting a bit because the kid was showing him up.
All in all I think it's great.

and own it on DVD....Just a wonderful film!!! again not of the caliber of Schindler....but damn close....I would put it in league or on par with Saving Private Ryan...when my son and I want to have an evening together...we throw on this or SPR...glad you enjoyed it too...
I saw it in 70mm-6 Channel with my girlfriend and returned a few days later to see it again with a couple buddies. Involving film that stayed with me for a while after seeing it.

I saw it three times, but for me it remain a failed effort.
It could have been a great film and Ballard did make it easy for Spielberg.
Malkowitch overplayed the part.
Bale was just great.
I agree with you. A failure along with "Always" and "1941". "AI", too.
"Hollywoooood," as exclaimed by the Japanese submariner as he looks up
the conning tower at what can only be the naked beaver of the babe
straddling the periscope. Worth the price of admission. Regards,

Disagree. I liked it a lot. As clarkjohnsen said, less 'Spielbergian' than the vast majority of his other films. Was it on a par with 'Schindlers List'? No. But it was head and shoulders above most of his other 'serious' films such as 'Munich' or even 'Private Ryan'.
And who doesn't like seeing low-level P-51s shot on 35mm film?
Cadillac of the skies.
You mean Lamborghini or Ferrari, right?
Quote from the movie. Though you probably know that.
Ferrari or Porsche might be my frame of reference. I would never, though, call the P-51 the 'Toyota of the skies'. (-:
1941 could have been such a good film, I thought that with passing time it could improve, so I gave it many a new try.
Why did it not work out?
I never found out beside the name -boring--
and fails too as a Comedy, if Spielberg had made more effort to aim at making it either one thing or the other it could have worked a lot better
Apparently a painstaking recreation of how Los Angeles looked at that time; even the plane John Belushi flies is the correct type with the correct markings for a coastal squadron in that area at that time
I'm a car buff and there isn't a single post-1941 vehicle in the whole film....
