Bergman can't be the greatest film director, he's too theater-y.

...I think his greatness is magnificently cinematic. I also suspect that you post this largely to be provocative, because you know so many people will disagree with you. It's not your opinion that's a problem for me; of course you don't have to like Bergman.In other words, in my opinion what you're saying is a little silly in the context of the general regard for Bergman's work around the world. If he's really that un-filmic how could he be even a good filmmaker? Your assertion requires that countless others who hold his work in such high regard would be somehow *wrong*. It just doesn't get you or the discussion anywhere interesting.
If you are really just interested in a lively discussion of the topic you brought up, why not just say: "let's discuss the relation between Bergman the theater director and Bergman the filmmaker. I find his films to be rather theatrical in a way that bothers me. I don't think he's cinematic enough. What do you guys think?"
I submit that this would get you more substantive replies to the question you raise than your short, rather glib introductory post. As you can see most of the posts have been brief rebuttals without specifics. Wouldn't you prefer a more exploratory and wide-ranging discussion of the topic?

My point is that Antonioni, Kubrick, Welles and countless others never could have had their seminal works easily and satisfyingly transferred almost of a whole to the stage but the works of Bergman largely (not the qualifier) could.
I might add that Bergman's women singularly are the most unattractive group I've ever seen with the exception of a gathering of women track team members once I witnessed--- but I digress.
I'm sure, clever lad you are, that you realize excellent cinematography, which usually is the case with Ingmar, has nothing to do with my point.
Lastly, some fellows such as yourself feel that one must post in a graduate student or other such patois to be taken seriously by... those such as yourself.

The problem is you did not.
A hint...Bergman was from day one fascinated by the...film.
Theater came later in his life.d
But it does no matter as his direction for films was not the static way one would understand commonly about a static director.
He was a film director. Point.
In this instance I was describing the impression left by the staginess of his direction. The fact that he didn't arrive at film directing from the stage isn't an issue.
Now, the $60,000 question: do YOU have a clue? ;0)

Wonderful and later his love with the Lanterna and his parent who was changing the rule and adding features.
He was a real movie maker.
And a theater man, who put- la flute enchantée on celluloid.
It was part of the very essence of his being.
That he was also a world class theater director does not diminish him as a film-maker in any way... it only adds to his overall greatness (Tin knows this he was just trying to be provacative... Auph may really believe what he wrote though).
