another magnificent film, this one seemingly an early version of "Les Liasons Dangereuses" but set in more modern times.
Maria Casares is magnificent (she also appeared in several Cocteau films, to great effect): one easily can see men throwing themselves at her.
This is very different from other Bresson films in that the performances seem polished, the style of acting professional. Yet, astonishing moral vision, fearless exposition of human vanity, cruelty, and destruction--- trademark Bresson features--- easily will be recognized.
Unlike Bergman, Bresson makes his "intellectual" films quite easy to appreciate: the women are gorgeous.

written by Cocteau, is full of gems.
Do you know Sacha Guitry? This Russian guy...
a Napoleon film...
re: B du B, Bresson's style was just developing so, if for no other reason than to see a genius evolving his language, the film is worthwhile.
This is, of course, to damn it with faint praise. Let me be clearer: this film is a brilliant, truly modern expose of bourgeois sentiment. I thought the "dancer" was very well played, her role being the sentimental key to the film. The unctuous French leading man was perfectly underplayed, too.
