be considered among the most elite.
I am lucky enough to be visiting Amherst where his entire oeuvre is being shown, along with the presence of the director, himself!
Last night, "Bones" was shown.
This is not film as I have come to realize it. Nor is it a documentary. Rather, it is a fictional story "acted" by non-actors which fully erases the "me vs. them" or detachment which all other films allow the viewer.
Here, the horrors which befall the characters appear unshaded, unimproved, completely transparent.
Suicide, infanticide, murder--- Costa doesn't flinch from portraying life on the very furthest fringes of society.
A day later, I'm still very troubled by this film but it isn't because of any blood-spattering, extreme violence, or hateful dialogues: Costa removes all the trappings of "traditional" cinema leaving the viewer with no escape, nothing to whisper to himself, "it's just a film."
At Cannes, this year, his film, "Colossal Youth," was the most highly praised.
"Bones" is the first installment of his already completed trilogy filmed in the poorest immigrant neighborhood of Lisbon (Portugal)and all (somewhat) about the same characters.
Great art is truth: see his films but be forewarned.
Follow Ups:

... but it's a narrow genre he ploughs and I know a lot of people didn't much like The New World.
nothing short of artwork....I did like The New World...I do think it would have been a stronger film with someone else in the lead role... to my mind Farrell is a weak actor. It is a real shame that Malick's career hasn't been more prolific...I have read that he is working on a new project called "The Tree Of Life"...no other information other than that....
With the insider trading mmmm knowledge from some of the posters here... does anyone have a list of the films Mallick worked on during his "holiday" from Hollywood?
As I understand it from Bob Shelton (the writer who did the first review of Dylan and later became a film reviewer) Mallick moved to France and occasionally worked on rewrites and similar projects but would not allow his name to be used.
I have no confirmation of this, but, if true, it would be very interesting to know which the films were.
Perhaps more for us than it would be for him!
As unlikely as it sounds Mallick did a treatment for Dirty Harry but none of it was used. He turned down The Elephant Man and wrote an unused version of Great Balls Of Fire.
This is from IMDB.
More digging needed here.
I liked The Straight Story too....

Jean-Luc Godard. After the death of Bergman this unofficial title passes to him. At work since the late 50's, Godard has moved western cinema in so many creative ways. Problem is his films are difficult and seemingly impenetrable to many Americans. Godard films demands viewing by those who have a well developed sense of cinema.
