With the coming of "The Golden Age...." its trailer pointed to the terrific contrast between the recent battling Elizabeths. Mirren playing a somewhat giddy, often capricious woman suffering from whim compared to a wooden Blanchett dripping of gravitas and all things dramatic and serious. Who do we prefer vs. who is most real?
I prefer Blanchett in the typical "historical" portrayl as someone you don't take lightly nor even consider mortal. It just fits better with the preconceived notions of history learned from schooling. Although, Mirren's portrayl shows us a "woman" acting as such, I prefer the regalness of Blanchett's queen.
Who else has a take on Liz vs. Elizabeth?

you're a life-long bachelor...How anyone could not think this woman has style, grace and beauty...is WAY beyond me....Mirren is a commoner in comparison....of course maybe I'm partial because if you put red hair on Cate...she looks like my wife with same hairstyle as here....I do love those english girls.....

Really, must beauty always be some sort of top ten? Let alone talent, and both of them are clearly among the most talented around.
Why not just admit they are both beautiful.
Helen Mirren has always been famous for her deep sexuality and Blanchett seems cut from the same cloth.
The fact that both of them are comfortable playing roles that are not glamorous and which require them to look less than perfect is a STRENGTH and not a weakness.

She is a high class actor, not that Cate is nowhere near bad, but excellent.
Mirren has more cultural deeph, and that shine through.
One of my very few actors that I cherish.
No wonder she is Russian...
...I can't say and I would never judge any actor's performance from a trailer.
They are both stellar actors, in different projects, for different mediums, with different directors and screenplays.
So it's more than just a matter of interpretation.
At this point, I'd have to say they are equally formidable peformances (remember, Blanchette did Liz once already for this same direcrtor). It may just come done to which project I prefer.
I'll let you know when GO comes out.
Not based on acting merit but on the way the character was interpreted. I like the more stolid, dramatic portrayal of Elizabeth by Blanchett yet Mirren may have actually captured Liz as more of a woman than a Queen.

...both. Really.
Two completely confident performances in very different types of dramatisations.
I don't think I would actually charactarize Blanchette's Liz as "stolid". We see quite an emotional Elizabeth, even an insecure Elizabeth through much of the film til she gains her confidence as queen.
It's more a difference of dramatic emphasis between the two films - I actually think the Mirren project has a more "reality" based feel than the film Elizabeth.

I think that Blanche is great as doing impersonification but only on the " see and feels " grade/ level.
While Mirren goes down to the core. ( Look at her in Elisabeth I!)

It's the material - an actor can only work with the script they're given. "Elizabeth" was as deep as a dime. I thought Cate did a great job in creating an interesting Liz...gripping to watch in as far as went.
I blame the filmmaker, not the actor.
And thank you for the welcome back - I've missed the gang. iit's been a tough year with 2 deaths of people closest to me...my father and my foster brother...19 months of hospitals, care giving, nursing homes and hospice, one after the other.
It's probably one reason I enjoyed Death At A Funeral so Much - I'm ready to laugh again.

What can I say, like in a film look at MY scars...Our daughter passed away last year almost from one day to the other, two weeks ago our beloved dog, three years, did not make it after a minor surgery in his eyes, and suffocated when waking up, even we choose the best doctor with the most modern equipment, and three years ago while with our son visiting a friend, our puppy dog fell out the window and broke her back...

Cate was just getting started and this was one of her first films...plus it did get her a lot of attention, on Oscar nom, and better roles.
There are only so many great roles in great projects at any given year, and not a lot of them are for women.
If asked which film would you recommend with a glorious role starting her?
That would be pain, would it be not?
Lord of the Ring or Charlotte Gray?
But donīt put me in a corner that is not mine! I like her!!!
Now if you look from this perspective about women in the film industry or elswhere, I can only tell you that if I were one, I would go on the streets and throw some stones in some windows....

That close our discussion, as it is my absolute feeling too. With the annotation that SHE choose her roles.
I think Kate Winslet has been better served in this aspect.
I, personally, am accustomed to seeing and feeling more comfortable with Elizabeth not Liz. Liz was almost too human (even if she really was) to be a good Queen.

...that's really old news.
I assumed the OP was talking about this in reference to "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" coming out shortly which is the Part Deaux of the original Elizabeth of which you speak. Also stars Geoffrey Rush from first films and Clive Owen.
So based on the first E film to me the two performances are like comparing apples and oranges.
But if I got excited ever time AMPAS screwed up I'd have died of apoplexy long ago, lol. Yes, Cate shold have won.

Been watching her since her Royal Shakespeare Company Days and think she's a wonderful actress.
thus far, she has tackled more diverse projects than I think Mirren has....Mirren while she has had some noteable roles has not in my opinion "pushed the envelope"....If you look @ Mirren's career...much of it is in TV...Blanchett has I think stepped out taken on some demanding roles...especially for a woman her age! Not that it makes me an expert...but acting was my major in college. Given Blanchett's age and what she has already done....if she continues as she has....she is in for a career to rival that of a Hepburn, Fonda or Streep...the last two being works in progress still...

Room for many kinds of dramas and actorly interpretations.
So if I had to choose, I simply wouldn't do it. I choose both.
As much as I enjoyed it, I thought there was a lot of poppycock in that first Elizabeth, but Blanchette was amazing.
I can find things to rpaise and things to fault in both productions.
Since GO has Clive I'll have to be there opening weekend. Based on the trailer my expectations are not high. I don't judge movies by their previews, however...it's safer that way. We shall see.
It's not a beauty contest and it isn't a talent contest.
2 great performers is better than one.
But every body is entitled to dumbness...
