23-yr. old Jean Simmons in an emotionally whip-sawing film noir.
Godard placed this gem in his top 10 of ALL sound films. I don't know if it's THAT good but it is damn good, especially the smoldering chemistry between the leads and the well-seasoned, clever-but-not-cutesie dialogue.
Otto Preminger directed and the stories about the film are legendary.
I won't divulge any now but it is a treasure trove of great tales.
See it!
Follow Ups:
Jean Simmons was making movies when she was a young teenager, but it never occurred to me that she ever looked innocent. Anything but. She is dazzling, even with heavy makeup, in Michael Powell's ":Black Narcissus," one of my favorites, and one of the great classic films.
Have you seen it?
Or "Hamlet" when she was, I think, 19?
INNOCENT.
Don't be so sensitive, geesh. You can call her innocent if you want to. Nobody cares.
Sorry.
:-)
Not to worry. I appreciate you not lashing back. Playing innocent roles or not, Jean Simmons was a great film star for decades. We can certainly agree on that. And you're right, I've never seen Angel Face.
ANYONE with the slightest regard for noir must see AF. What's most striking is that she nor the script writer rely on any "tells" about her true nature. It really is a very confusing portrayal, mysterious as hell. It has a primal appeal which few films do.
