This film is boring and this Moliere look so absolutely lost...
What is happening to you, Tin.
Are you losing your judgement & taste for movies?
For some it suffice to have the " French " touch to be appreciated.
So far I remember the French critics did not like it at all, but does it matter at all.
No.
But your, should....
" Mieux vaut une tęte bien faite qu'une tęte bien pleine."
Follow Ups:
you found "Shakespeare in Love," a light fluffy entertainment to be WONDERFUL and meaningful and great art!
Moliere is a bitter sweet film which captures, for those familiar with the acerbic playwright's work, the soul of the French master.
The careful viewer will see the lead actor subtly change in demeanor and personality as the film progresses, as he is tempered by the realities of his profession.
The rich merchant also is brilliantly played, with none of the melodrama one would expect and receive in a S I L-like effort.
Does anyone remember anything about S I L half-an-hour later?
Moliere still reverberates; it not only has something to say, it says it eloquently, entertainingly, and powerfully.
...to Moliere. My wife is a French literature scholar and she liked Moliere OK but she wasn't over the moon about it. Based on what I recall about her reaction to the 2 movies she prefers Shakespeare as well. But I'll ask and confirm that I'm remembering this correctly
e
...my wife likes BOTH Shakespeare and Moliere about equally. And she's pretty smart about these things.
Great art? Art of a good entertaining, yes.
I saw it again a few weeks ago, and it have not lost any sparkles.
You see something in this film that is not there.
Read French critics...If that helps...
" Mieux vaut une tęte bien faite qu'une tęte bien pleine."

But to have an open mind won´t´harm you, specially ...You...
Here is one critic I would have wrought if I would have the lust for it....
" Mieux vaut une tęte bien faite qu'une tęte bien pleine."
...you should let French critics "tell you what to like." What he's saying is that he thinks you should read French critics and CONSIDER what they say and see if it has any affect on your perception and view of the film. I think it's your assumption that he wants to - rather than Patrick's intention - to strong arm you.All he's asking is that you allow for the possibility of communication, which he sees as an alternative to living in a world where people just throw rigid opinions in each others' faces.
towards my sneering countenance.
This may be one of those films we just agree to disagree upon. I really found it exceptional, even though I too had reservations about Duris' appearance, demeanor.
SPOILER:
The cuckolded husband, so well played, in less skillful hands would just have been lampooned; he is a staple of comedy since Chaucer or Boccaccio. It is Tigard (and Moliere's) genius to make him a complex character, to wed intense feeling and pathos (here the skill is maginficent) to what originally appeared as a shallow, vapid, and vain peacock. The actor deserves an Oscar.
Chic type, Berlin. You got it dead right.
Now Tin knows me and I know him, but the sense of fatality of missunderstanding is growing, I fear.
It must be Tin...
" Mieux vaut une tęte bien faite qu'une tęte bien pleine."
