Well as I certainly respect him as an actor, now to say he is one of the finest?
I never loved him much.
What film was he that did shine?
Ok he was a good actor, but that is all.
" Mieux vaut une tête bien faite qu'une tête bien pleine."
Follow Ups:
Cool Hand Luke, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Slapshot, The Verdict, Absense of Malice,The Hustler.....
A GREAT actor by any measure.
Not one really great film. Middle of the way to the best.
How was his tomato sauce...
" Mieux vaut une tête bien faite qu'une tête bien pleine."
At least six great movies in that list. All great performances by Newman. Very few actors were ever in his league. Truly one of the all time greats.
The Hustler is pretty darned close to a great film.
Yeah, he was a movie star. Maybe he wasn't the most versatile actor who ever drew breath. But he was very talented - very poswerful and charismatic, and leagues finer than a Brad Pitt.
Yes I agree. But does that make him a top actor?
You gave the answer yourself....
And yes he is all you said he is. I never said the contrary!
I like at best in...small role...
" Mieux vaut une tête bien faite qu'une tête bien pleine."
.
It depends on whether you look for low key, realistic performances or BIG acting. I think he was pretty good in "Hud" and, for a subtle performance MANY years later, I like "Nobody's Fool." He wasn't too bad in "The Verdict" too.
Not too bad...That would be it...I pretend to say that the best part of his acting are his blue eyes, he know how to use them, he sure do...
" Mieux vaut une tête bien faite qu'une tête bien pleine."
...is probably my favorites portayal of his, although I saw it when I was 15 and impressionable.
Don't forget "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" or "The Sting".
