I don't know when John Wayne played a Roman but he played Mongol Genghis Khan, eyes and all.

John Waynes "Roman" line: "Surely this man was the Son of God" ( spoken in his customary drawl )
Can't remember the film
I guess he + Marlon Brando had the same speech therapist

I forgot that one; "The Greatest Story Ever Told"; but certainly Wayne played it like a German who joined the Roman Army!

Wayne's line was "Truly this man was the son of God". The story goes that the director, George Stevens, asked Wayne to redo the line with more awe. So Wayne said "Aww, truly this man was the son of God".
Actually I don't think it's true, Wayne was no dummy, but it's a good story.
