better reviewed ones, and they are all but ignored.
A post on a fifty year old sappy classic or James Bond and.... miles of bandwidth expended.
Say, whatcha seen on tv, lately?
Follow Ups:
Saw it on DVD, and in spite of the reviews this film will stay with me much longer than all the blockbusters I've seen this year.
Ideas, poetry, Spanish and Peruvian folk sensibilities, historical drama, religious dogma - all beautifully and lovingly preserved on film.
Once I got past my phobia of indifferent craftsmanship, the play revealed itself for a masterwork of literature.
Recommended, if looking for a film experience that matures/satisfies AFTER seeing it.
last line of my original post was "tongue-in-cheek."
I can understand watching Helen Mirren as a detective or Alec Guiness as a spy. But, with limited time available and a choice between second rate actors starring in tv series with second-rate writers and directors or classic films? When one factors in the visual aesthetic of film over tv, as well, it isn't a tough decision.
Nothing "wrong" in and of itself now, except.... why watch good when great is just as easy?
"I can understand watching Helen Mirren as a detective or Alec Guiness as a spy."
Excellent TV series from the both of them - Prime Suspect and Smiley's People are classics I'd recommend you try to find on DVD.
Mirren's Tennison was also the sexiest detective......
Best Regards,
Chris redmond.
Ya think????
Anyway, there's some TV out there that, quality wise at least, rivals great movies. It CAN be done ya know. Good writing, acting, cinematography, and direction, isn't limited just to theatrical releases.
Now TMZ on the other hand.....

I can't disagree since I don't see all that much. Every time I get some DVD of a well-thought of HBO or other miniseries, I am disappointed. I'm entertained, mind you, but I always feel I could have been watching something better.
NO offense meant. It's my taste. I feel that way about reading, too.
Also HBO recommended, Band Of Brothers, Deadwood and Rome. These are stories that just can't be told in 1.5-3 hours. Ditto, on Showtime, Dexter, (in three years, has become a classic). Weeds is a hilarious Showtime Black Comedy that can hold its own with some Coen brothers offerings.
The movie going experience is still #1 for me, but for sheer dramatic value, those 5 listed can hold their own with the best of theater presented dramas IMHO.

B of B I tried for a couple of hours: Schumer (is that the guy's name?) was too lightweight. Never believed a word or action.
I'll try Dexter. And Rome (I had a classical ed).
Gracias.
Make sure to watch at least 5 epis, it really draws one in. It was a shame they didn't renew it for a third season but production costs were huge and viewership was not. Still it ended on a logical note. Some time compression and some literary license of course, especially when Mark Antony and Cleopatra died. The generally accepted real history would have made for a more poignant ending IMHO (Not classically educated, but I can Google).Do I have to spell it out?

I hate movie theaters. I also don't like much on TV. We just watch DVDs, so I don't see films until they are on DVD.
Rod
At least, I like the nice theaters. If the film is presented decently, I enjoy it. Presented really well, with a good audience, I'm in seventh heaven.
Nothing compares to seeing a movie up on the BIG screen in a darkened auditorium, with an (attentive) audience of people who really want to be there, especially when the sound and PQ are very good. It's the communal experience I love, and of course the sense of scale, the immersion, the theatricality of it all. No HT can compare to that experience IMO - yet.
And yes, I know all about bad manners, screaming kids, ringing cell phones, yakking people blah blah blah. Prints incorrectly framed, out of focus, yup been there done that. But the great experiences make up for the duds. (Seriously, I do NOT even attempt to see Wall-E or Harry Potter on a weekend matinee.)
But when it's good, it's great, and it keeps me going back.
I don't watch much on TV either. I - erm - read BOOKS. And I do watch some movies on T, either DVD or on TCM, Sundance, or IFC.
Goin' to the movies is still a fun ritual for me!
is the premier way to see a film and always shall remain (like live music!).
I've found that attending matinees is a surefire way to have better behaved audiences. I must add that folks in this town are fairly well-mannered, in the main.
Here in Washington DC we have one 'real' movie theatre left: the Uptown.
One big room, with balcony. Cinerama screen still in place. 70mm capability (sadly, never utilized anymore.)
Despite different owners and different rumors along the way about chopping it up into smaller theatres or closing it, the "Old Queen" still reigns. With a good print, nothing compares to going there.
And it's done old-style: manual changeover between reels.
In all the years I have seen films there, I have never seen a missed cue, a blown lamp or a reel out of focus.
Now if only there were more good new films to show there...;-)
CC.
Now this may just be my luck at having the time to go during the day, even the 10.00AM screenings, but I love going to the cinema.
I belong to 2 cinema clubs to get discounts and free tickets and the local World Cinema Club... a minimum of 2 tickets per film for 12 films a year plus a couple of freebies and all for $60.
I go to advance screenings which seem to be less popular than after the release and I have a great time in not too full theatres and can more or less always have my favourite seat (D11 depending on theatre).
I just about NEVER rent DVDs but do buy them when I see something interesti8ng whether it is a film or TV series.
I hardly watch free to air and have 30 something cable channels where I watch mainly football, lifestyle shows and a couple of cri8me series.
I have tried free to air but 6 minute ad breaks including news bulletines in a 30 minute programme don't make me a happy camper.
I also love news radio.
?
-Wendell
I really only watch TV as and when it is on and half what I watch is live football from Europe.
Probably 30% is anyway.
Do you record something and then watch it later with the ads taken out?
else to watch at my convenience and fast forward through commercials. DVRs are great.
-Wendell
Are there that many shows worth watching?
I increasingly find myself in the same camp as those who say there is too much music/video/entertainment around.
Do these recorders automatically edit the adverts or do you just fast forward through them?
I totally agree that sports needs to be live.
Luckily the Fox sports channels only have breaks at half time during soccer matches.
but the networks and advertisers insisted that feature be removed. You have to fast forward through them. As for enough to watch, I don't know.
I'm more concerned about being able to watch when I want than volume of programming. Mine is never more than 30% full but I wouldn't do without it.
DVRs, GPS systems and Cellphones are the most useful advancements I've encountered in the last 20 years.

I remember watching that damn ghost back when I was a kid. Vaguely remember Show oF Shows, Howdy Doody, Arthur Godfrey, Dave Garroway, and Flash Gordon Serials. Zero hot chicks on in the 50s unless you count Beaver's mom, Harriet, Ethel or Lucy, and I don't. Certainly not like that whore dog who just got finished hosting House Hunters on HGTV. Red hair, revealing purple top, and dangerous cans. Wife thinks I'm actually watching what's going on. And that Sandra Lee on Semi Handmade Cooking, Wow! Now that's good TV! Whatta Ultra MILF

my local DVD store sells old TV shows including Topper, cheap, in the bins by the cash registers. I bought a few of these since Topper is one of my earliest TV memories. I'm pretty sure I saw repeats rather than original broadcasts. I guess I'm pretty old, but not as old as you might think.
we're probably close to the same vintage.

Having watched the entire run of the original I have found it hard to watch the bastar... whoops, sorry... Americanised version!
Personally tho, I find the American version has more interesting characters. Extending even down to the warehouse.
Summer Heights High, that is an import that reeks.

Maybe the US version simply speaks to Americans as the UK one does to Brits.
I hated Summer Heights High but my teacher-in-traini8ng girlfriend just rolled around laughing at it.
Beats me...
I love Ricky Gervais. We owe him a lot for The Office. The series finale of Extras was excellent. Still have it on the DVR and watch it ever now and again.

Man I could watch that ever night. Jim owns Andy and Dwight. The wife actually laffs at it and trust me on this, that don't happen often around Casa Nasty.Earl ain't too bad but Jamie Pressley's Joy needs to be trashier. Hell, I know 4 or 5 gals who are way trashier than her and don't even live in trailers.
Boston Legal Finale was fun, loved Scalia marrying Alan and Denny. I duess it wasn't a real queer marriage tho but that dance at the end was uncomfortable. A little to librel for my tastes overall but it does have its moments. Like when Alan read the riot act to the Japaneses in the conference room.
You oughtta watch Fambly Guy. I don't but my kids say I should.
BTW, if yer ever sick, don't ever turn on The View. Never.

I hope when I get to hell I don't get stuck in a room with Tin and Jeffrey Dahmer.
One guy wants to kill me and eat me the other want wants to bore me to death.I am still impressed with the Simpsons.
The ability to slide in a subtle joke is still done well.
Family Guy I haven't got into but I know I should make an effort.I didn't see the Boston finale.
It's on too late.

about 200 lbs ago. But i guess ya gotta take what ya can get. When you get rich, come on down here, there's a lot of ex Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders trolling around for money. I hear bunches more are coming on the market as they ditch their Investment Banker/Car Delaership owner loser men who're all going belly up.

Loved 'em all (in different ways, for different reasons).
Saw The Wrestler yesterday and while I appreciated how good the performances were I just didn't really care about anyone in the film.

I very rarely go to the theaters. I usually wait for the disc to come out.

...Mama Mia on DVD with my wife.
Other than the beautiful Greek scenery, it sucked.
Merle can sing. Pierce can't.
I'd give it a C-.
I actually think a cinema full of laughing singing people (66-75% women) makes for a better way to see this film which really has been converted from B & B's original i8nto some kind of female anthem.
The view of Julie Waters dancing on the table will live with me!!!
Brosnan's singing is no worse than Scarlett Johansson's.... hansson's.... errrr sorry I lost my thread... Scarlett Johansson's...

Fringe, The Office, Madmen, etc. in haitus, and The Shield and The Wire gone forever, things are a bit slow right about now. Of course we have Lost and 24 to look forward to in January and the back 10 of most of the above series coming later in the winter as well. So things will pick up again in a few weeks.
On the movie agenda are the Wrestler, Slumdog Millionaire with Petulant Daughter, and Frost Nixon.

Here is another one to check out: Life...
- It's a very quirky cop show with an interesting back-story and lots of dark humor (Wed. on NBC)- (Open in New Window)
Hell, that works for me. Thnx for the tip, hope to see some reruns before the back 12 come up in Feb.
Too bad about Pushing Daisies, hopefully it'll get a second life on another network. That show was just too esoteric for mainstreet I guess:(

...and I also finally got to see Let The Right One In as well.I'll see Milk over the holiday, as it's playing on the other side of Indy 25 miles away. The Wrestler hasn't opened here yet, nor several others.
The powers that be release many of the serious, film fest and Oscar contending movies the end of December, never mind the movies that run for one week in LA and NY for Oscar qualification that don't arrive in the hinterlands until the new year. What with work and the holidays and all I just don't have the time or opportunity to see as many art movies as I would like. I imagine there are several of us on the forum who like foreign and indie movies who just haven't been able to see the lastest lot.
But we will. :-)

to see Milk on the weekend that it opened. Surprisingly, it was only showing at two theaters in the whole Chicago metropolitan area. Both theaters were miles away, in areas where parking is impossible.
Holiday parties ate the last few Saturday nights. Hope to see it in the next week or so.
post your thoughts after you've seen it.
