Good point: Cruise was the only American in the cast. We are treated to a host of warm, recognizable Brits and Krauts in all the various roles. And, they are good!
Being a "star power" movie, Cruise is shown to be almost the sole, heroic planner and executor of Operation Valkyrie which was to use the German Army Reserves to take over the central government in Berlin. The idea was that once Hitler was killed they would disrupt normal communications and grab hold of all the Nazi power players and the SS. As history has already told us--it failed.
Cruise did okay but still is not seasoned enough to have the gravitas to be absolutely 100% believable. Leo would have been much worse.
There were a lot of nice historical touches in the form of aircraft, weaponry, and sets. The art direction was impeccable.
Anyone interested in this era of history will be compelled to see it and it won't be a bad thing. You see the birth of the plot, recruitment, execution, the final failure, and the briefly portrayed retribution that came down on the major players.
It's more than popcorn and it's two hours long to boot.
Follow Ups:
...bomb at the box office and be the beginning of Tom Cruise's "downfall".
The critics have not been kind to it or Cruise's acting - one newspaper gave it a 'D' and the other one a 'C'.
There are some fine academy award contenders in the theaters now competing for movie goers dollars.
Sound like a DVD rental to me.
The only current one which has been pounded worse by the critics is "The Spirit".
Waiting for grit's review of that one....
Mostly dads with family in tow and teens happily texting away not the least bit interested. Tis a pity.
...exposition in Valkyrie came across full force. (Singer's "The Usual Suspects" is one of my faves.)
Even without hollywood plot twists, he kept the heat on - somewhere between "Enemy at the Gates" and "Downfall".
Cruise was capable, and the film's examination of how by contingency plans a coup d'etat was engineered was very interesting.
"Downfall" might make a nice double feature with this one.
I like movies about WW2, and will therefore probably enjoy this movie.
There are lots of Cruise bashers, and I do recognize that Cruise himself bashed in Oprah's couch. And he holds some peculiar beliefs as well . . .
But I have enjoyed his work in A Few Good Men, Minority Report, The Last Samurai, and Collateral. Hopefully, I can add Valkyrie to this list.
.
had this plot succeeded. Hitler micro-managed his Eastern campaign against opposition from his Generals; causing traffic jams, chaos + un-necessary delays Hitlerian pig-headedness was an ally to the Allies
Putting the defence of Germany back in the hands of say, Erwin Rommel, ( who was alledgedly involved in the plot, and became one of its many victims ) with Hitler out of the way, might have prolonged the inevitable by many more months ( or, Heaven forbid, even brought about a reversal of fortune )GW
