SInce a few entries would fit both (and not in any particular order):
When Worlds Collide
On the Beach
Dr. Strangelove
Planet of the Apes
12 Monkees
Children of Men
FailSafe
hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (okay, this one is tongue in cheek, but the Earth does disappear....)
Day After Tomorrow (a bit political though)
Deep Impact (best of the asteroid strike movies IMHO, the others were simply too cheesy).
"A Quiet Earth" I imagine would be on that list, but I haven't seen it yet.
Follow Ups:
Jane Alexander....she really was robbed of an Oscar that year.....I think very few people saw it in the theater.....the emotional impact of the film has stayed with me all the years since seeing it....
Poor Slim Pickens. Thirty years in movies only to be remembered for a 3-second bomb ride and the first on-screen fart.
We're chasing terrorists in the wrong place...they're on Wall St.
mindset and the ending was a warning, not a prediction.
.
A.I. is my favorite among those listed; the film isn't actually about an apocalypse, but the irony (pay-off) of the post-apocalyptic world is dealt with near the end of the film. How about near apocalypse (cautionary movies where the world is placed at serious risk by Man's arrogance and recklessness)?
Movies like...
The Mist
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The 27th Day

...a classic favorite I had forgotten about.
wakes up one day to find he's the only person left alive on Earth
Low budget, but that doesn't matter: this is a Classic

"The man is only half himself, the other half is his expression." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Way underseen good movie.

Great selection and probably my # 1. Waltzing Matilda was a perfect fit for the movie.
I'm hoping the post apocalyptic The Road will be worthy.
The Stand didn't totally suck.
Of course, Road Warrior was worthy as well ;->
These are all post apocalyptic but since you included On The Beach I threw em in.
