also mention Chaplin whose humor transcended belly laughs as did that of Moliere.
Follow Ups:
What I should have said in my initial post was that Tati could have been a silent film comedian on the order of Keaton, Lloyd, Chaplin, Fields, and a few others. These guys are the Olympians of classic film comedy and Tati belongs in their company...
Tati's films remind me more of the films of Keaton and Lloyd, silent and sound, than those of Chaplin. That's because of the tone of their characters rather than their comic abilities.
Yeah!
The range from adequate to inept and are proof positive that Chaplin was a great genius and innovator. An old saying goes, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." If that's the case then Chaplin was the most flattered man of his era. When I see one of his films, or one of Keaton's, or Tati's I am awed by their talents and skills. They were, and are, comic giants upon whose shoulders the great comedians of today stand.
Two more Chaplin films you should see, if you haven't already: "Limelight" and "A King In New York." These aren't his best films but still worthy and proof that Chaplin was a great actor, too.

I have seen them. Of coursef. While a King in New York, is long past his genius period and marking the end of his career.
but it's still an interesting film, at least when Charlie's on screen. I understand it was a labor of love for him but the studio interfered and the resulting film was not what Chaplin had envisioned.
Keaton and Chaplin, Keaton was much more generous.
But the greatest of all, is he-Chaplin-
If the word genius can be use for an actor and or an actor, he is the one.

Where I restated my opinion of Chaplin relative to Tati. It's the same general opinion of CC I've expressed in numerous threads on this forum. He's been a popular subject here which means there's been a lot of threads since 2001.
