most seem to have waxed nostalgic about it as a throwback to the good ol' days of horror prior to the torture-and-sadism-porn that seems to have become the norm.
I don't enjoy any of them, but I'll leave the more general discussion of the genre's societal impact, and Raimi's role in 'where we are now', to others.
Saying that, I'm interested in your report-if it's as tongue-in-cheek as the reviews imply, it should be fun.

Well, I liked it a lot, (despite the other negative reviews from a couple of other posters), so take that for whatever it is worth. And all of the others leaving the theater seemed to like if very much as well. There was a bit of humor to it, most of it tongue in check, and very similar to his earlier Evil Dead films. It was well made, had a nice scary vibe to it, and the camera work was typical Sam Raimi (i.e. good).
If you like horror films like the scream series, and 1408 and The Ring, (all of which I did), then you'll probably like it.
If you like horror films like Saw, well, maybe not. (I did not like Saw myself.)I'd give two thumbs up.
My two cents worth anyway.

It sounds like I have similar tastes so I will definitely see this.
goes to show, everything doesn't need to be a masterpiece to be enjoyable. Sometimes you just want entertainment, not an on-screen treatise on Serious Film Making.
