Pixar goes way down with this one. A septuagenarian Indiana Jones a film cannot carry. A great beginning and a forgettable climax connected by an unending middle. Zikes! Even the kids were getting restless after 30 minutes.
The first ten minutes, however, are of lasting worth. Had it sustained that, and few films of any sort can or do, it would have been a classic.
I'd wait for the DVD and can it after that first short piece.
The much-touted 3-D? Like fireworks, it just got old after the first whizbang tricks, too.

Question "Authority", the mainstream media sucks - Go Independent and hold BOTH parties accountable instead of just the other guys!
I need music to help forget the reality of today
and most of the characters they encountered as well, but it did not seem to matter, for some reason - maybe the pace of the movie - I was swept away and enjoyed my viewing.
Some of the scenes at the end were mind numbingly realistic. I was feeling queasy when they were on the zeppelin and I saw it in 2D.
thanks

after the brilliance of that opening and very realistic 7-minutes, we were taken to la-la land. It may have worked if it were a dream sequence of the old coot but playing it for fantasy after that beginning..... death knell.
The first 5-10 minutes is brilliant, but it really falters from there. The keying on the danger of the compressed air tanks, and Quint destroying the radio. You could see where it was going.
I think Spielberg is greatly talented, a born filmmaker.
But I cordially loath Jaws, a manipulative, one trick pony of a movie that I literally find unwatchable.
I'm not a snob - I love The Hidden frex.
But I truly HATE Jaws.
Oh...and I quite liked Up.
Sorry to differ so strongly. My impression: UP is a wonderful film about lost opportunities, dreams re-envisioned, loneliness, the isolation of being an outcast and coming to grips with age in a changing world. The adventure, or fantasy if you prefer, is crucial to the depressed and angry elderly man's adaptation to the real world at the film's conclusion. It is also crucial to the boy finding someone who believed in him (the elderly man assumes the role of father figure). This is one of the most poignant, bittersweet films PIXAR has ever dared to make.
As I pointed out below, the "goony" bird was merely a clever MacGuffin, but saving the rare bird and it's offspring from the bitter old adventurer (the once thought heroic figure from the old man's youth who turns out to be an opportunistic scoundrel) leads to the old man rediscovering his compassion and learning to see the world in a different way while providing the means by which the desperate-to-please underachieving boy acquires his own self worth. You may think that I'm reading too much into this movie, but I'm not; I suggest watching it again (hopefully under better circumstances).
IMHO, this is one of the great PIXAR films (on a par with Wall-E, Cars, The Incredibles and Monsters Inc.), perhaps not as brilliant as Finding Nemo, Ratatouille or Toy Story I & II, but far superior to A Bug's Life. Note: FTR, I'm not even a dog lover, but those talking dogs were a hoot (SQUIRREL!).
Cheers,

in the levels below them "Up" is.
Lugging the house just was a bad plot device. An allegory that didn't work. The plot was convoluted with the bird and the house.
Hey, you like a lot of stuff I loath. That's okay. I'm down with it. Really.
Now, go watch "Oldboy."
The front story and 3D was really good, but the entire story fell apart once they arrived in South America.Basically when the dogs started to talk, the story floundered. The villain was not much of a villain.
I've been to other movies like this..historically, I thought the first 30 minutes of "Gremlins" was even among the best movies ever, but then the screenwriters ran out of what to do with the plot.
More recently, that Will Smith sci fi movie with the marvelous dog. When the dog dies part way through, the movie dies. What was the name of that one, "I am Legend"?
really care about it?
There was no tension to the plot, no zing. LONG middle period with lots of cutesie stuff.
Compared to "The Incredibles," this was terrible.
I think many may be so overawed by the animation--- and that amazing first biography-- that they suspend critical analysis of the rest.
I'd imagine this film won't do very well as the next couple of weeks unfold. Very little repeat, very little adult viewing compared to mega-hits of the genre.
You'd imagine wrong.
"Walt Disney Pictures' Pixar cartoon "Up" held at No. 2 with $30.5 million, taking its total to $187.2 million after three weekends. The previous Pixar release, "Wall-E," had earned $163 million in the same span last summer."
...SQUIRREL!!! ;O)
..not to see it. Really what's the point of MOST of this kind of stuff anymore for grownups. Take a nap; enjoy a nice dream instead.
The audience my wife and I saw this with applauded at the conclusion; kids in the audience were very quiet and attentive throughout and enraptured rather than bored, and a lot of adults were emotionally touched by the depth and daring of the story. I'm really sorry that you didn't like it, but you seem to be the exception rather than the rule. In my estimation, PIXAR has hit another one out of the park. This is an absolutely marvelous film from start to finish (loved the visual "dog-fight" pun! --- sorry about that little spoiler, but as sight gags go it's pretty subtle, and some adults may not even catch it).Hey, if you saw this in a small town maybe you were watching a worn out print or the reels got mixed up! Did you get gum on your shoes, sit in popcorn grease or see it when you were in a really bad mood? There are extraneous things that can ruin a film experience.
Two thumbs way "UP" ...! On a 5 star scale, it's a solid 4 1/2; highly recommended for teens and adults.

Haven't seen a movie twice in the theaters since I got home theater over a decade ago. I may make an exception this time.
Of course, everyone I know that has seen it says I am like the main character...
The only thing I don't know is what the heck I'm doing in the Snob Forum.
...takes you so long to see 'em.

Gimme a hoot next time you're 'round these parts.
