Watched this absolutely marvelous flick for the umpteenth time on Encore
last night, and my question for everyone is this: If this isn't the
best crime flick of all time, then what is? The script is absolutley
killer, the acting and direction are simply marvelous (esp. Kevin
Spacey), the atmospherics just perfect, and the denoument beyond
compare. You can watch this film multiple times, as I have, and still
not know for certain what really happened. And you learn something new
every time you watch it!
I do love this movie.

And Pitt and Paltrow do fine work, too.

there's like a million good 'crime movies' out there, and we're limited in memory, and available bandwidth. How about, for D. Lynch fans, 'Blue Velvet', and 'Mullholland Drive'? This could go on forever and a day.

Read my list again :-)
I was thinking mainly of heist type movies when I was doing that list, and certainly No Country For Old Men would qualify as a crime flick, although for some reason I don't think of it as a "crime" movie.
Fargo would be a crime movie as well, although I think Blood Simple is just as marvelous in its own way.

...but I didn't think of either of those two as "crime" movies.
But of course they are, plus they're two of the best American movies ever - of any genre.
Good heist flick with Isla Fischer going against type and Matthew Goode playing a predatory creep to perfection. A tortured protagonist you can't help but feel for from the get go.

...fiction category, and I would like to add "The Bank Job" for the "real life" crime drama category.
The Usual Suspects has the best story telling and tension, (and Spacey!) througout, and just does not let up - fantastic cast, writing, direction and ENDING.
The line-up scene is priceless - Benicio Del Toro was being interviewed on his Fenster character and said that because Fenster didn't advance the plot with his dialog, he should try a unique street slang vocalization - something in line with Fenster's being part Asian and German?!! He is following the script, it is just hard to tell he's following the script (hehe).
He was given the green light by the director to do so and when the cast loses it in the line-up scene, (they kept it in) I always crack up - real inventive acting and a testament to ensemble work.

original story by James Cain, screenplay written by Raymond Chandler...it gets no better than that.
Although I like the Usual Suspects a lot and have seen it multiple times, I feel that it is a mystery without a solution and that bothers me. There is no way to tell what is true when it is all lies. So although it seems as though there is a big secret at the center, the secret remains secret.
bracelet is just so cooooooooooool.

'A History of Violence'. 'Strangers On A Train'. 'The Killers'. 'Ripley's Game'. 'Memento'. 'Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels'. 'Double Indemnity'. 'Taking Of Pelham 123 (original)'. 'The Conversation'. ad infinitum.
Any of these off the top of my head are at least equal to 'TUS'. Not that it's a bad film -in fact, it's good-but the genre is ripe for great story telling, which can lead to a great movie.

pretty damned good
That video montage at the end with the key voice-overs picked from Verbal's interrogation sends chills down my spine every time. But as a pure crime/mystery film I'd have to go with The Third Man for the best all time.

Agreement on all named, plus add one with a similar kind of payoff at the end - The Long Good Friday. The Brits do crime film so well.
I haven't seen it in awhile but I remember the revelatory thrill I felt when I saw it the first time.

LA Confidential, that it is. It came right to the front of my brain when I read the OP. But there are a lot of prospects for best crime movie.

If not, it's right up there. Great film.

I'd add Ronin and Heat to the list.

film with terrific performances from Elliot Gould and Sterling Hayden deserves mention in the modern era.
For a tiny budget film also to reach these heights is unusual but "Detour" certainly does. If you haven't seen this very short but endlessly fascinating little dark noir, you should.
