white collar crime + white collar crime.
Gomorrah is street.

parody?
Rod Steiger, on the other hand, gives an immensely powerful performance which is fun to contrast with Brando's "Godfather."
I think that was an intentional result of his approach to the part. The highly stylized portrayal of a such a character's evolving psychology over 30 years. All the major characters inhabited dramatic parody. All of them are brilliantly insane and brittle to various degrees. This is a very complex, obsessively crafted movie on every technical level. To my eye both Gomarrah and Il Divo - especially the latter - brought something fresh and new to Italian film. They are culture laid bare, in a most personal and contemporary way. I was reminded of Rocha.
I've watched both multiple times and they still deliver an absolutely delicious and weighty experience. Both are a perfect conjunction of art and entertainment.
Gomorrah is probably the more "approachable". What a great bookend for The Godfather it makes. No great character to match Brando but it immediately and certainly projects itself into that league of storytelling.
Steiger is an old favorite. His barely contained nerves-on-sleeve intensity fits in with the Italians well. I was unaware of that film/performance until a couple years ago.

five minutes before the explosion. Amazing.
Very good points about "Il Divo" and "Gamorrah." I'll be seeing both again in the near future. Finally, I've got my Netflix list under thirty!
..your list is under 30. I stay maxed out at 500.
of my Netflix available selections. I probably have forty saved on Netflix which aren't yet available from it. I wish they'd increase their foreign selections; some very good dvds have been out for quite awhile which it doesn't have. I sure don't want to buy them @ $15-30 bucks a pop.
