also I've started the fascinating 17 Moments Of Spring ( so historically informative), The Prokovsky Gate. Many more. The Island, Dersu Uzala. A treasure trove of Russian classics.

There is currently mud slide of movies promoting Russian nationalism, and I have strong distaste for them.
That, coupled with Putin and his communist scum buddies all crossing their chests in churches really makes me puke. Once again we are seeing the resurrection of that disgusting chauvinistic spirit - but if you take the film in isolation, without putting it into the context of the current events, and also the personalities involved, it might look differently.
BTW, its director, Pavel Lungin, is a very interesting man. He is the son of the perhaps most preeminent literature translator in modern Russian history (and she did a wonderful documentary on her life, which is incredibly interesting on its own), and perhaps best known for his Taksi-Blyuz movie, which I strongly recommend.

Well, by the time of your post my wife and I have already long recovered from the unpleasant feelings caused by that film... :)But since you loved it, you need to start looking for the next marvel from the same director, with the same lead actor - Tsar.
More darkness for the masses! :)
I am pretty sure I will be watching that one alone... with Beamer.

Christian parable than political.
Let's say you were a Jew and your family perished in the Holocaust... do you think you would be simply admiring the camerawork in Leni's films?
Certain works can only be truly understood in their historical and political context.

Japanese director... Russian author, Russian actors, Russian location, Russian studio...
Does it matter, really? Name Yuri Solomin is worth writing down.

he's Japanese.
Now, who is this Yuri guy?
The rest - I see no reason to argue.
Solomin is a very good actor, he plays Arseniev in that movie, also had many good roles.

as Lithuanian ones.

I wouldn't even know where to start, but next to the White Sun there was Osenniy Marafon - my wife loves that film with a great lead actor. Not sure if it has the subs, though. The 17 Moments is a well made WW2 spy drama with one of the most popular Soviet actors in the main role.

Victor ,thanks a lot for the link! Bring more of them. Have you seen "Master and Margarita" TV series on DVD's ?-Hilarious and well made (In my opinion) My Russian is pretty rusty so I wonder if there is any subtitled version) I fell in love with the book when I was 14. Still one of my favorites.

Yes, saw it, pretty good, especially the ball scene! Makes you think Kubrick should have watched it before making his Eyes Wide Shut.
The book of course is deep and I suspect was one of inspirations for Da Vinci Code, except done right.
