It seems that Avatar has really provoked the armchair critics. Upon initial release, they told us how bad it was due to its simple, predictable story, unsophisticated screenplay, marginal acting etc, etc, etc. In spite of their warnings, it’s proved to be enormously popular with the movie going public throughout a large portion of the world. OK, the public was warned by the guardians of human culture and chose to act otherwise. What else is new?
So why is it after 6 weeks, these same critics are still ranting about the film? Every time there’s a news release or some other reminder of Avatar’s “success” they spring into action to tell us how bad Avatar is, how ignorant the audiences are and then remind us of what we SHOULD be watching. And it seems to be the same persons every time. What I don’t understand is why these persons are so persistent in their criticism. Do they dislike success? Do they fear the rapid decline of human culture if they don’t speak up on multiple occasions? Do they fear the diversion of funding away from their pet cinema projects? Do they crave attention? Are they jealous? Why can’t they just accept the situation for what it is and move on? Curiously, a significant portion of professional critics have been positive about Avatar. I wonder what the amateurs know that the pros don't? And yes, there have been plenty of negative reviews, mostly from the lesser critics...no need to post links to them.
The public was ready for a fun, easy to watch film designed (IMO) to provide a couple of hours of escape from their everyday lives. Avatar is that film. If the public wanted a deep, intellectual cinematic experience, they’d go back to school and take a course or two in the cinematic arts.

In the end the pleasure one may have to enjoy the pop corn can only be, but legitimate.

And I thought ALL movie critics were armchair critics. Are there other kinds? Those who watch movies while suspended by a wire? Or sitting on a spike? While drowning in a pool?

...I've been crying ever since I read these humiliating responses, esp from those who don't appreciate US colloquialisms. Bwwwahhhhh
Learn to smile now and then, Mr. Subtle! :)BTW - do you realize you are not too strong in "US colloquialisms"?
