Globalization. Stupid just intelligent enough to get to read.
Arrogant?
Tell me.
Follow Ups:
Avatar is typical of the highest grossing films. It's just entertainment for most people. So what?

The real truth.
There is no doubt Christians versus lions would have even higher gross revenue, but there are a few stupid laws in the way.
Too bad, really, as the Christians are reasonably priced these days.

And I must remember you that a Christian ( the story told us ) has also a chance against a lion.
But was it the Lion King?
I doubt it.
Mass appeal.
It seems that Avatar has really provoked the armchair critics. Upon initial release, they told us how bad it was due to its simple, predictable story, unsophisticated screenplay, marginal acting etc, etc, etc. In spite of their warnings, it’s proved to be enormously popular with the movie going public throughout a large portion of the world. OK, the public was warned by the guardians of human culture and chose to act otherwise. What else is new?
So why is it after 6 weeks, these same critics are still ranting about the film? Every time there’s a news release or some other reminder of Avatar’s “success” they spring into action to tell us how bad Avatar is, how ignorant the audiences are and then remind us of what we SHOULD be watching. And it seems to be the same persons every time. What I don’t understand is why these persons are so persistent in their criticism. Do they dislike success? Do they fear the rapid decline of human culture if they don’t speak up on multiple occasions? Do they fear the diversion of funding away from their pet cinema projects? Do they crave attention? Are they jealous? Why can’t they just accept the situation for what it is and move on? Curiously, a significant portion of professional critics have been positive about Avatar. I wonder what the amateurs know that the pros don't? And yes, there have been plenty of negative reviews, mostly from the lesser critics...no need to post links to them.
The public was ready for a fun, easy to watch film designed (IMO) to provide a couple of hours of escape from their everyday lives. Avatar is that film. If the public wanted a deep, intellectual cinematic experience, they’d go back to school and take a course or two in the cinematic arts.
In the end the pleasure one may have to enjoy the pop corn can only be, but legitimate.
***It seems that Avatar has really provoked the armchair critics.
And I thought ALL movie critics were armchair critics. Are there other kinds? Those who watch movies while suspended by a wire? Or sitting on a spike? While drowning in a pool?

...I've been crying ever since I read these humiliating responses, esp from those who don't appreciate US colloquialisms. Bwwwahhhhh
Learn to smile now and then, Mr. Subtle! :)BTW - do you realize you are not too strong in "US colloquialisms"?

Why do people enjoy sport?
Same old game, hitting/throwing/kicking a ball about by millionaires - why would anyone get worked up over that?
You either get it or you don't, but trying to label those who do enjoy sports and popcorn films as less intelligent than you is arrogant and smacks of snobbery.
You just don't get 'it' Patrick - accept it without trying to rationalise.

You have a point. No doubt. I was waiting for this.
But tell me what about people saying that wine above $8 are a waste.
I never pay more than £5 for a bottle myself, but if I didn't enjoy that £5 wine as much as I do I'd certainly be prepared to pay more, and if I tasted a glass of £100 a bottle wine which was significantly better then I might well treat myself to a bottle. If somebody did say it was a waste of time spending more than £5 on a bottle I'd say that for him, that was probably the case, just as if someone says it's a waste of time spending more than £200 on a pair of speakers, for them this would also be the case.

Ah. You see it is not the point of $5 BUT the way to educate our taste. To go higher and higher on the scale of acknowledge.
It has less to do with money but more with curiosity and passion.
From a Bottle of wine to a movie, let´s make a bridge.
My brain did not let the magic work on this film because the effect were to crude, but on some it did, and they are the lucky one.

I disagree. I, like many others, can fully appreciate more 'serious' films which are emotionally involving, challenging and thought provoking, but does this mean my educated taste cannot then enjoy a 'popcorn' film in a totally different way?
For me no, even though with every film I can find fault and with Avatar and of course I will have found the story as predictable as you and the dialogue 2-dimensional (if not the picture).
"My brain did not let the magic work on this film because the effect were to crude, but on some it did, and they are the lucky one".
It's not magic Patrick - it's a case of seeing the glass as half full instead of half empty, and not letting the faults detract from the bigger picture.

Well I tried and failed.
But let me tell you I am not the only one.
But who care, I did not enjoy it a bit.
You among many here could.
"But let me tell you I am not the only one."
No problem with that - I only have a problem when the 'ability' to enjoy certain films is attributed to intellect or a more educated pallet.

...because it's a simple story anyone can understand, presented in a new, exciting, revolutionary format with stunning visual artistry.
That's all it takes...
There is a large difference. Great visual artistry would be any of Miyazaki's films. There really is no comparison.
(nt)
A story for people who are retarded, New? Hardly! Revolutionary? Hardly, ask Hitch. Stunning? That dark greenish soup?
Hardly.
Most intelligent folks seem to like it.
If retarded folks were the target audience then that would obviously be a smaller demographic, but one that you might fit in quite nicely. ;O)

LoTR wasn't enough?

Pretty much ALL "successful" films were made for idiot. Titanic... Gladiator... LoTR... many others. So we got one more - who cares?
I don't pay to watch them, so to me they don't matter.

Hey now, don't be attacking Gladiator. That movie was only for the sophisticated : )

if a big studio makes mega profits on a film like that they are very likely to greenlight a less marketable good film with some of those profits.

If someone is willing to give them his money - what do I care?
There is, of course, that nagging feeling that the society that spends more money on mindless garbage than on education is a sick one, but really - who cares? Do you?
Who cares that our kids suck in science and math when we have best baseball players on planet and we make highest grossing trashy films?
Not us... not today! :)
