It seemed as tho Mara did an imitation of Rapace's portrayal. A good one, but an imitation nonetheless, lacking gavitas. My son, who saw it with me, didn't see the original, and loved Mara's job.
As for the movie itself, it was a draw, IMHO, up until the ending. Hell, IIRC, it was basically the same movie. The poingant ending in the Sweedish version was much better than the Hollywood version. Plus,
SPOILER-------------
Way too much time devoted to the looting of Wenrstrom's money in this incarnation. 10 minutes vs. 20 seconds. With no more impact.
Sweedish version, **1/2
Hollywood, **
The Girl Who Played with Fire, the best of the bunch.

Follow Ups:
The story was expanded and, I guess, more like the book. At least I now know that Lisbeth was a squeeze with feelings. Also, that Martin was a psycho not just a rapist. The whole thing made more sense.
I do see your case for Mara's imitation but she did it BETTER. She projected COLD instead than Rapace's FIRE and she is easier to look at.
Going with 3.5 outta 5.

Mara showed more vulnerability and the relationship including her devastation at the end which essentially drives the next two books. Also, I liked the extended sequence about the money looting at the end and was angry that that was given nothing in the Swedish movie.
AKAIC, the treatment in the 30 seconds of airtime dealing with the looting in the original was as effective as the 5 or 10 minutes devoted to it in the already long remake.
I thought the emotional impact of Vanger seeing Harriet, fetched from down under in the original, far surpassed the impact, such as it was, in the remake.

She had better cans.
My stars are out of 4 so we're not far apart in the star dept. The end of the movie gave Sweeden the edge over Hollywood.
