So far every Indian film that I have seen has been a piece of crap... my familiarity with them goes back... oh... almost 60 years. Sure enough there have been somewhat bright spots like Raj Kapoor with his Awaara, but generally speaking it was just a stream of silly syrup.
Why question now? Well, I was looking through the long list of Netflix foreign films, and noticed that almost 50% of them were Indian.
Now, I have known that India was top movie producer by volume, no surprise there, but the question is - has anyone seen a good one among them, and if anyone had any recommendations?

temporary escape from the perpetual misery the people of India live in. So I dpn’t expect any more from Indian cinema than I do the “chick flicks” we get here.
Who is John Galt?
3-D is bad enough but, gag, to struggle with dat for two hours.
It's very Western (he was raised in India but went to UCLA Film School and lives in L.A.) and I have to say pretty damned funny...if you like low-brow humor. I laughed out loud several times.
Baba-Booey to you all!

I hear it's a classic.

Baba-Booey to you all!
I have a very superficial knowledge of Indian films, but I do know that they are hardly all the same, i.e., syrupy! I have seen several that I really liked (but not on Netflix), yet I hesitate to recommend movies without knowing what kinds of movies you like.

Another film by Ray that I find impressive is Distant Thunder. A harsh story told with delicacy and understatement.
Distant Thunder is one of my all time favorites. Worth seeking out.
Oh yeah, they can't kiss or grope and if they do it's followed by an eight minute production number.
I like that, except for a few minutes at the end where the director
thought he'd turn it into a serious message movie.
But the first half of the movie is lovely.
Made in France, nudity and such all welcome.

I think it took place in the US or Canada and a Hindu couple got wrapped up with some Paki neighbors. Forgot title and, of course, it was like two hours long.
No singing, no dancing.

director, Satjavit Ray.
From wikipedia:
"Films by Indian directors like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak, Girish Kasaravalli,[5] Shyam Benegal,[6] Adoor Gopalakrishnan, G. Aravindan [7] and Mani Ratnam have been screened in various international film festivals.[4] Other Indian filmmakers such as Shekhar Kapur, Karan Johar, Mira Nair, Deepa Mehta and Nagesh Kukunoor have also found success overseas.[8] The Indian government extended film delegations to foreign countries such as the United States of America and Japan while the country's Film Producers Guild sent similar missions through Europe.[9] Sivaji Ganesan, and S. V. Ranga Rao won their respective first international award for Best Actor held at Afro-Asian Film Festival in Cairo and Indonesian Film Festival in Jakarta for the films Veerapandiya Kattabomman and Narthanasala in 1959 and 1963."
C'mon, Vic, get to work on the good stuff!
As soon as they make them available on Netflix. I am too old for DVD chasing! :) Life is definitely getting too short.

A rather mainstream Indian flick but a good one. You even get to see the luvly Kiera Knightley as a teen in a strong supporting role.
It's in regular rotation on one of the pay movie channels currently.

reason I ask is there's a movie called that too.
I wouldn't say I loved the sitcom but I did enjoy it. I LOVED The Office (before Micheal Gary Scott left).

but agreed (I was playing "nice" saying it was good). Too many caricatures and missed opportunites for yuks. We watched the first season tho, don't even know if it got a second as we lost interest. Will ck out the movie as it's in rotation on cable.

A man of your vast knowledge of the Film surely has heard of the Satyajit Ray Trilogy?
For one Pather Panchalli is memorable.

It has been sitting in my Save portion of the queue - who knows for how long.
As soon as they receive it... :)
...but maybe you know it.
