Gloria Swanson. And a terrific performance also by Erich von Stroheim, as the faithful butler. Nancy Olson is perfect as the young innocent, as well. And the direction by Billy Wilder? Again, perfection.
You think this 50s film is dated? I just saw a special screening at the local art theater with two classes of college kids--- there was raucous applause as the credits rolled.
Brilliant writing, excellent cinematography.
It won 3 Oscars but should have won a dozen more.

"Billy Wilder! Billy Wilder! Billy Wilder!"
Sunset Boulevard is one of his best, in a career full of bests!
Hazanavicius went on to say he could thank BW a thousand times.
Sure, why not?

But I would not worry much about THAT audiences reaction - they were pre-wired to like it. Show it in your typical 16-screen movie factory and you will get the sense of "dated". Not dated to you or me, but definitely out of step with modern times - I thought that was the definition of dated - no?
If Sunset Boulevard is dated, then so would just about every other film of that era.Now...my idea of a dated film from that era would be a science fiction film set in the future, but the people have haircuts and clothes that look very early 50s, and the "futuristic" cars look like late 50s cars.

And all without profanity or nudity.
One of the greatest.
