Nice way to start a movie. Hustle is one of the longest roller coaster rides you will ever want to take. Enjoyable, compelling, but not something you would do twice in the same month. The girls win this one hands down. Adams gives a compelling and dramatic performance of a con woman who hooks up with Bale in order to form a "dynamic duo" con team while Lawrence gives a soulful yet humorous performance as Bale's wife who is never happy and always full of drama. The guys just can't touch these two.
The characters are well drawn but Renner actually had me feeling "poor guy" as the seemingly hapless mayor struggling to make Atlantic City happen. Bale is convincing as the world-weary con master while Cooper is a bit ambitious with his almost over-the-top performance of an FBI agent trying desperately to make a name for himself. One of my all-time screen heroes makes an uncredited appearance doing what he has always done best.
This is the best thing I've seen Lawrence do. I wonder if the Academy is going to want to see her again?
Well, this isn't a Christmas movie but it is definitely one of this year's "must sees". Have fun and no bladder busters...it's a long one.

...Scorsese? No doubt one of the best films of the year, but if you've seen any of Scorsese's earlier films, especially "Mean Streets" and "Goodfellas," the camera techniques, use of voice-over and integration of sound track are right out of the Scorsese handbook. And that's actually a good thing, just not very original.
performances you'll see this year.
Everyone is screwing everyone, so who's to like? Still, it's hard not to feel for the scammers and their hunters because above them, you know the puppet-masters are being entertained by it all, not threatened in the least.
As entertaining as all this is, it's not a soufflé. There's real substance behind all this effort, if you care to analyze it. Certainly, after the S&L, dot.com, and real estate fiascos, it is hard for a thinking individual not to become cynical and a little aware that laws and their enforcement stop somewhere below that top 5%.
But forget all of that, this is bravura, over-the-top fun.

I haven't ENJOYED a movie more this year. Louie CK was great in his supporting role and even P.W. Herman had a nice turn in a sleazy role. I'm gonna have to go into the big city this time tho and see it on a screen with a soundsystem befitting it's great musical soundtrack. Little suburban Cinemark mickey mouse screen SUCKED HIPPO BALLS.

...that the film has grown on me well after leaving the theater. I wasn't sure what to make of it while watching but I now appreciate how good it was having had some time to cogitate on it. Definitely not for everyone.
...it resonates afterward.
Terrific film with amazing performances, clothes music and sets which perfectly capture the era.
One reviewer called it a modern "Sting".
My only criticism is that Jeremy Renner seems miscast as the Mayor.
...almost like a straight Liberace. I thought Renner did ok in that context but can understand the miscast perception. The performance that bothered me just a bit was Cooper's FBI agent...somewhat over the top and definitely over acted most of the time IMO.
...they were all caricatures.
...with variable results.
and one of the few times I liked Bale. Actually I think most of the actors were in new territory (which they handled well) and I agree Cooper was a bit much.
I was not sure where the film was headed for a while but it gelled nicely at the end.

Nice review. I've seen some good movies this year but this one's my favorite. What a blast!
Give me rhythm or give me death!
