I am totally surprised this took so long to happen. Movie theater decorum began its slide down the pole with the advent of the ever-present baseball cap in the 70's. Though this is truly a tragedy I have to weigh it against my own instincts when I see people waving around their phones before and during the feature with complete disregard for anyone else. I feel the inaction of the theater management is just as much to blame for this event as the angered men. Once upon a time we went to the cinema to get away from life and take a vicarious leap to some other place. How much that notion has been drown by electronic devices and self-centered narcissism. Maybe people will start to follow the rules and control their impulses.

A retired US police officer is being held in connection with the fatal shooting of a 43-year-old man in a Florida cinema in a row over texting.
Curtis Reeves, who is charged with second-degree murder, was denied bail during his first court appearance.
The 71-year-old opened fire after asking a man sitting directly in front of him to stop texting several times.
He told investigators he was "in fear of being attacked". The victim, named as Chad Oulson, died in hospital.

unbelievable on the Oppo. Blacks blacker than Putin's soul.
...enough black in my life already! But Patrick could probably use some more... need to ask him. :) Give me some juicy bright colors, give me High Heels, or a light French comedy! After watching the Turin Horse I had to ask my wife to hide the gun safe key.

book by Tolstoy, "What is Art?"
I KNOW you'd enjoy it, immensely.
Skip the first half where he goes into great depth about philosophy and cut to the part where he gives his opinions on art, criticism, and life. What a great mind.
...a jerk near the front/center was using a tablet during the movie. It was annoying and you could hear folks whispering about it.
Someone yelled out TURN THAT THING OFF OR I WILL KICK YOUR ASS .
It was promptly shut off... followed by applause from the audience.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
What was the retired cop carrying a gun for, anyway? Yes, I realize it IS Florida....

mess with an old man and you get killed. Just an old saying.
There was an incident in my local community ... years ago ... 70's as I remember. Some young tough was harassing an elderly man and the senior promptly shot him dead. As I remember ... The old man just said that "the unmannerly youth just pissed him off and my life is ending anyway ... so what did I have to loose".

not really but it was fun to write it........
ET
...threw popcorn on the old cop.
"Fear of popcorn?"
Seems a little overreaction to use lethal force.
'You sucker punched me in the face, knocked me down, are on top of me beating my head into concrete'.... lethal force ok.
'You threw popcorn at me'. Not so ok

...I agree with lethal force in your first scenario.
But after stalking a kid and confronting him when the police dispatcher warned you off, you asked for it.
It's not what you think it is.
Like going back to your car.

...barely worth bringing up with the texter much less ultimately taking his life.

seldom stop by themselves.
...and texting, low level talk and even loud popcorn or candy wrappers are OK. Once The main feature begins, shut up and pay attention to the big screen. In my locale, theater goers pretty much abide by this. OTOH, if I had my way, there wouldn't be adverts and previews.

and bustle of today's society I don't like. This (phone usage before opening credits roll) falls in the "don't sweat the small stuff" category of things that piss me off. Once the show starts, it's another matter and I've told more than a few fellow patrons to shut their yap, turn off their phone, got cussed at once but he turned his phone off.
