I fully suspect that this is not something for me, but I would like to confirm that.I am willing to invest time in several episodes... A question - should I view the first season, or perhaps a different season would give me a better idea? Do they have to be watched in sequence?
Anyone here loves that show?

We were late adopters of this show, had given up the "premiums movie channels" on cable years ago and had moved on to rental BDs from Netflix for the weekends. But my daughter and her husband constantly hounded us to check it out, so we, just last year started to get the episodes on BD from Netfix. A disc a weekend. Ended up becoming BIG fans. In fact, since the season five series wasn't going to be available on BD until next year, we bit the bullet and ordered HBO, just to get our fix ASAP.
Word of warning, some of the BDs will have 2 episodes, some will have three. Make sure you know what you have (we missed one episode, assuming they all had only two per disc).
BTW, I found the Game of Thrones Wiki, a big help in getting up to speed with all the characters.

That ALMOST happened to me last night. :) Caught it in time.
...disc #3 contains just one single episode!
Not sure why such jumps?
Don't know, most of the time it would be the last episode that had a disc to itself.
You have probably noticed by now each episode ends as a cliffhanger. No happy endings. One of the reasons the show is so addicting and encourages binge watching. Good stuff
We quickly gave up, real American trash

a la an earlier HBO series, Rome (which I believe was a joint HBO/BBC production).

and is better in almost every way.
Breanne rulz.
We love it! My wife got "me" the seasons 1-4 collection/set on BD for "my birthday" in July. Season 5 ended in the Spring. We binge-watched the first 4 seasons on BD and are anxious to see season 5 before season 6 begins.
I can highly recommend the season 1-4 collection if you haven't seen any of it. Beats the heck out of buying the seasons individually.
You need to buy one of those barely legal media boxes found on eBay or Amazon. They would allow you to binge watch almost anything. That's what I did. I knocked off GOT, True Detective, Walking Dead, in cocoon mode.
Have been since S1. Have never seen a lick of the series, nor do I like the fantasy genre that much. And yet it still sounded good to me those years ago...
But I'm waiting until it's over, and will buy the complete BD set then. I do not have the means to otherwise view this series in its supposed A/V glory. And I've felt really burned buying TV series BDs season-by-season, it's like they often charge as much for the two halves of the final season as for the whole series sets (at least they do here). No respect for the long-time viewers/buyers who got them there. Yes, I buy *a lot* of BDs, I insist on the best-available PQ at home, and I'm "cheap". :)
And I've been told I'll want to watch the whole thing, in order, from start to finish (so far).
glorious viewing experience that will be. It's gorgeous enuf in cable HD, in BD it should be reference quality. We've done the same with the Breaking Bad however, the BRD isn't an upgrade over cable quality, the dvd set would have easily sufficed.

"E Burres Stigano?"
Hmm, I've sometimes been surprised just how much better the BDs are than the HD OTA experience (not for GoT obviously), never mind the DVDs. OTOH there have been a few instances when the BDs are not significantly better than the DVDs, in general, but in certain scenes the BDs "clearly" rule. I regretted the DVD-> BD "upgrade" in those rare cases, but these days BDs and DVDs cost almost the same, and I've never encountered a TV BD being *worse* than a TV DVD, so may as well go BD.Here, OTA is far superior to cable, which is usually downscaled to 720p. 1080-> 720 doesn't look nearly as bad as going the other way, probably obviously, but it's still clearly not (to me) 1080. Since I'm watching on a 1080 display, I get the joys of 1080-> 720 by cable provider then 720-> 1080 by the display = awful. Thus the BDs for me for TV series. I am disappointed that many series I like have stopped issuing BDs, DVDs only.
I have heard nothing but praise for the GoT production quality. I want to see and *hear* it, something that cable can't do for me. Perhaps obviously since I'm here, I actually get more excited by a good audio experience than a video one. That excitement is much rarer (on TV/movie BD) than I think it should be, but then sound is real second-fiddle to video these days.
Edit: I was told in this forum that the cable provider I'd have to get HBO from does 720-> 1080 regularly for their other "channels", but I don't know if in fact they do it for their HBO offerings. You wouldn't get "full-HD" audio regardless.

I am such a pushover!
...figuring out who is who, who is related to who, etc., will be pretty rough. It really won't make much sense unless you start at the beginning.
Dean.
reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
task explaining the relationships between the Starks, Lannisters, Targaryans, Baratheons, Greyjoys, Wildlings, not to mention the individual characters like Little Finger, The Hound, Brienne of Tarth, Walder Frey (die Walder die!!!), Mormot, Lord Varys, The Red Witch, etc., etc., etc., etc.,. Quite the complex and challenging story that we love.

If I was not a fan...what wrote would sound like complete gibberish, but way to go on the families and scratching the surface on the characters...
The people that read the books are going more nuts than just the fans of the show, because now they have no idea what was coming...
They did pretty well at the Emmy's last night...
When the two producers first wanted to do this series, first question George Martian asked them..."who is Jon Snow's parents?"...they got it right which gave them the green light from him...
Speaking of JS...wow, lots of theories out there...can't spoil this for Victor...
Thanks
Mark
My endorsement probably won't sell you on it because our tastes often differ, but if you give the first season a try, it won't let you down.
I am not a great fan of fantasy films, but will give it a chance.
I will have to stagger these discs with the films my wife put in the queue. :) I might change from 1-DVD-at-a-time plan we have now to 2 or even 3 for a while. :)
I agree with everyone here and I was skeptical about the genre...I am not a medieval fantasy kind of guy...One of nephews read the books and he told me to watch it...
This encompasses 7 Kingdoms, with all different geography with cross arranged marriages, alliances, bastard children, deception all pining for the Iron Throne...
Season one is imperative to get the lay of the land, families involved and charactors...it starts rather slow and very confusing, but by the season 1 finale...who will go what the hell???
Every season builds off that...you really learn to hate, love and loath ALL these flawed characters...lots of foreshadowing with big twists and big payoffs...the story telling, (plot), is like a one of your circuit boards, intricate, all related and it all matters...(how is that for analogy??)...
This is very conducive to binge watching...
As it as already been said nothing on TV to date has this kind of production value, stellar casting of actors with unapologetic and unflinching story telling and cinematography...the camera does not look away or blink...
I personally think you will enjoy it, if you make it through the first season...
Please let us know what you think of it once you get a couple of seasons under your belt if you choose to watch this...
good luck
thanks
Mark
except the part about binge watching. This is a *brutal* show. if you binge watch it, they are likely to find you still in the fetal position 3 days later...
It says something, when the best character is a drunken, whoring dwarf.
I made it through the first 3 seasons, then bowed out. Too exhausting for me.
That said, if he can get past the basic setting, Victor might like the show.
Jack
of which there is plenty.
Some may think of it as a glorified Lord of the Rings but I like the drama and story that LotR does not approach with it's sappy, preachy, redundancies.
and I survived the shocking deaths (not sappy at all)
really. Some humour (not as prevalent as in, say, the Breaking Bad) to relieve the tension but overall, a solid suspensful drama, with memorable characters, in a world that's a little, off.........

and most say it is pretty much true to them. It must be watched from the beginning in order for you to be introduced to the core characters and subterfuge.
Everything is very lush about the production and the cast is top flight. England seems to have a wealth of fine Thespians and Dinklage (most favorite character) is about the only American around.
At $6M an episode it is about 3X the most expensive hour long shows. Like 'Mad Men', it takes a few epis to get in the swing but TGOT kicks off quickly.
Watch in sequence or not at all.
It has stunning production values and really good writing.
It is perhaps the most depressing show I've ever seen.
Like this person? Fine, we'll kill them horribly? How this this character? We'll kill them too. Seriously, it's beyond dark. It's the Mr. Bill show with real people.
I've given up on it.
