In Reply to: RE: 'III: The Ritual' : A healthy does of Russian surrealism . . . posted by Billy Wonka on October 30, 2016 at 11:52:40
I liked it. The nightmarish, dreamlike states during the "mind melds" reminded me a bit of David Lynch's efforts along these lines too. The ending was slightly weak (it's as if weak endings are unavoidable in movies these days!), but certainly not as weak as some I've seen. I thought some of the cinematography was beautiful too. And, as you imply, it's so nice to find a film these days with surreal/horror elements, but without any dumb screaming teens or chainsaws! Thanks for the heads up!
(BTW, I thought Aiya was more of a babe than Mirra!)
Follow Ups:
Many surrealists are simply people who could not make it in other fields. Be it paintings or movies - same difference.
For instance, when the shackles were taken off the Soviet art in the late eighties, everyone and his brother in law started doing "surrealist" paintings. They were far easier to paint and much easier to sell.
So any time I hear that word I cringe and run for cover. In 9,78 cases out of 10 it is just the cover for trash.
And Lynch? Bleah! Hardly a good recommendation.

Russian surrealism run amok. I don't watch Russian crap everyday because it isn't available. Plus, I won't be ordering the disk. It was a one-time fling with Aiya and Mirra.

I think you simply MUST order the disk, and not just one, but at least two, send one to Patrick, he is still recovering from the pepper vodka I brought him. :)
