Maybe my priorities have changed, but I saw this last night with my two boys, and perhaps I think less critically and instead experience the joys of a movie through them. They liked it, with the exception of my younger son who covered his eyes at some of the kissing scenes. And then there was the bathroom scene out of The Shining when I was waiting for the punchline that thankfully never came.I liked the movie, and its references to movies of the past, specifically Back to the Future. The Zemeckis Rubik's Cube which reverses time sixty minutes. Cool.n Basically Willy Wonka on steroids.
I think if you take the movie at face value, don't look for deep messages, aren't looking for the answers to all of life's problems, aren't looking for an experience akin to climbing Mt. Rushmore, and have either an interest in gaming, or the displeasure of two kids who have an interest in gaming, then I think this can be an enjoyable film.
Frankly, I hope I live long enough that I too can be part of the Oasis.

...my take is that it was designed to be a lot of fun with wider appeal than might be typical for this genre of movie. Not heavy on messages or moral preaching, not a lot of character development and a predictable plot but wow, incredible CGI eye candy. Great 80s sound track and a bazillion references to other movies and 80s era pop culture. I saw /heard the IMAX 3D version and was impressed. It was a wild and crazy 2:20.
Glad you mentioned the music. I enjoyed that part of the film as well, and my kids singing along to Twisted Sister's We're Not Going to Take It is worlds better than them singing along to the latest Justin Bieber tune, in my ancient male dude opinion. Though I did wish they turned up the music a little in the mix.
...not sure if you're referring to the music in the movie but at my showing it was appropriately loud when it needed to be.
Generally, I like the IMAX audio. It's not audiophile quality in terms of pin-point imaging and it seems that intelligibility aspects might be enhanced over neutrality. But wow, it's satisfyingly BIG and the low end is visceral. I thought the club scene was great with New Order's "Blue Monday" pounding away above the ambient and surround noise one might expect in such a venue. Put a big smile on my face. I AM curious what younger audience members thought of this. So much modern pop music seems so bland and uninnovative by comparison.
I did not see it on Imax. I agree that Imax is MUCH better sonically than a garden variety cinema. That very well may have been the difference.
I covered my eyes during some of the kissing scenes, too. Yuck!
